Frank Davis (Irish Footballer)
Frank Davis (1921 – April 17, 2006) is regarded as the man responsible for making Waterford United F.C. the major force they became in Irish football from 1966 until 1972, winning the league title four of the six seasons he was in charge. As Chairman Davis was responsible for bringing Johnny Matthews and Jimmy McGeough to the club, paying £3,000 for McGeough to Derry City F.C. Derry City Football Club is a professional association football club based in Derry, Northern Ireland. Johnny Matthews
Johnny Matthews (27 August 1946 – 25 December 2019) was an English footballer and manager. Matthews started his career playing with his home club Coventry City. He moved to Waterford United during the 1965/66 season on St. Patrick's Day under the impression from Jimmy Hill that it was for just a six-week loan period. Matthews played in the last seven games scoring twice and his loan period was extended. During the following season he signed for the club on a permanent basis. In the next 13 seasons Matthews became a legend at Kilcohan Park. In total Matthews won 5 league medals with Waterford, was awarded a 6th many years later after not playing enough games in his first season with Waterford and another with Limerick as well as 3 runners-up medals in the FAI Cup. Jimmy McGeough
Jimmy McGeough (born 13 August 1944) is a Northern Irish former football player and manager. Playing and coaching career His clubs included Derry City, Lincoln and Waterford United. Joining Derry in July 1963 he was part of the only Derry City side ever to win the Irish League (Northern Ireland) and was an Irish Cup winner too with the Candystripes. He scored in the European Cupbr> McGeough played his last game for Derry at Coleraine on 9 October 1965 bringing an end to a remarkable sequence of never having missed a single match for Derry since his arrival in July 1963. Peter Thomas (footballer Born 1944)
Peter Thomas (20 November 1944 – 19 January 2023) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper in England, Ireland and United States. Born in England, he made two international appearances for the Republic of Ireland. Club career In 1962, Thomas joined Coventry G.E.C., playing with them until 1966. That year, he played one game for Coventry City. He went on loan to Waterford F.C. in 1967 where he made thirteen appearances. Coventry City transferred him to Waterford in the summer of 1967 and he stayed with the Blues until 1975. Thomas is associated with bringing a new style of goalkeeping to the League of Ireland. He rarely kicked the ball on the offensive, throwing when possible with great accuracy. He also represented the League of Ireland XI and won five league medals and a FAI Cup medal and played in twelve European Cup matches for Waterford. Kilcohan Park Greyhound Stadium is a Greyhound racing in Ireland, greyhound racing track and former soccer stadium located in the south of Waterford, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Operations Racing takes place every Friday and Saturday evening.
