Francois Deruyts Prize
The Francois Deruyts Prize, or Prix Francois Deruyts, is awarded every four years to recognize progress in synthetic or analytic superior geometry. It was established in 1902 by the Académie Royale de Belgique, Classe des Sciences, and carries a monetary award. Originally recipients had to be Belgian, but currently EU nationals are eligible. Académie Royale De Belgique
The Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium (RASAB) is a non-governmental association which promotes and organises science and the arts in Belgium by coordinating the national and international activities of its constituent academies such as the National Scientific Committees and the representation of Belgium in international scientific organisations. Lucien Godeaux
Lucien Godeaux (1887–1975) was a prolific Belgian mathematician. His total of more than 1000 papers and books, 669 of which are found in Mathematical Reviews, made him one of the most published mathematicians. He was the sole author of all but one of his papers. He is best remembered for work in algebraic geometry. From Liège, he was attracted to the work of the Italian school of algebraic geometry by the work of one of its masters, Federigo Enriques. Guy Hirsch (20 September 1915 – 4 August 1993) was a Belgian mathematician and philosopher of mathematics, who worked on algebraic topology and epistemology of mathematics. He became a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts in 1973. Jacques Tits
Jacques Tits () (12 August 1930 – 5 December 2021) was a Belgian-born French mathematician who worked on group theory and incidence geometry. He introduced Tits buildings, the Tits alternative, the Tits group, and the Tits metric. Life and career Tits was born in Uccle to Léon Tits, a professor, and Lousia André. Jacques attended the Athénée of Uccle and the Free University of Brussels. Pierre Deligne
Pierre René, Viscount Deligne (; born 3 October 1944) is a Belgian mathematician. He is best known for work on the Weil conjectures, leading to a complete proof in 1973. He is the winner of the 2013 Abel Prize, 2008 Wolf Prize, 1988 Crafoord Prize, and 1978 Fields Medal. Francis Buekenhout
Francis Buekenhout (born 23 April 1937 in Ixelles near Brussels) is a Belgian mathematician who introduced Buekenhout geometries and the concept of quadratic sets. Career Buekenhout studied at the University of Brussels under Jacques Tits and Paul Libois. Together with his teacher Jacques Tits, he developed concepts with the diagram geometries, also called Buekenhout geometries or Buekenhout–Tits geometries. These largely disregard the concrete axiom systems of a projective or affine geometry and put these and many other incidence geometries into a common framework. Simone Gutt
Simone Gutt (born 1956) is a Belgian mathematician specializing in differential geometry. She is a professor of mathematics at the Université libre de Bruxelles. Education and career Gutt was born on 13 July 1956 in Uccle, near Brussels. Dimitri Leemans
Dimitri Leemans is a Belgian mathematician born in Uccle in 1972. Biography Leemans obtained his Licence en Sciences Mathématiques at the Université libre de Bruxelles in 1994 and his doctorate degree, under the supervision of Francis Buekenhout and Michel Dehon in 1998. He is currently Professor at the mathematics department of the Faculty of Sciences of the Université libre de Bruxelles. He lived five years in New Zealand from 2011 until 2016 where he worked for the University of Auckland as an Associate Professor.
