Franco-Mauritian
Franco-Mauritians are an ethnic group from Mauritius who trace their ethnic ancestry to France and ethnic French people. Franco-Mauritians make up approximately 2% of the country's population. Origins The first French settlers arrived in Mauritius (then Isle de France) in 1722, after the previous attempts of settlement by the Dutch had failed, and the island had once again become abandoned. They lived and prospered on the island, ruling it until the British invasion of 1810. The French by now strongly identified with the island, and the terms of capitulation allowed the settlers to live on as a distinct Francophone ethnic group for the next 158 years under British rule before Mauritius attained independence. By 1920 the French Mauritian population on the island was between 70,000 to 80,000, around 20% of the total population. Mauritius ( ; french: Maurice, link=no ; mfe, label=Mauritian Creole, Moris ), officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about off the southeast coast of the African continent, east of Madagascar. Paul Bérenger
Paul Raymond Bérenger GCSK, MP (born 26 March 1945) is a Mauritian politician who was Prime Minister of Mauritius from 2003 to 2005. He has been Leader of the Opposition on several occasions – from 1983 to 1987, 1997 to 2000, 2005 to 2006, 2007 to 2013, October 2013 to 15 September 2014, and again from December 2014 to December 2016 where he was replaced by Xavier-Luc Duval. Following his party's defeat in the 2014 general elections, he became Leader of the Opposition for the sixth time, making him the longest ever to serve in this constitutional position. He was also Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2003, and he was a cabinet minister in the government of Anerood Jugnauth in 1982 and 1991. Adrien D'Épinay
Antoine Zacharie Adrien d'Épinay (6 February 1794 – 9 December 1839) was a Franco-Mauritian lawyer, politician and slave-owner. Biography Adrien d'Épinay was born in Isle de France on 6 February 1794, the son of Antoine Jean d'Épinay and Marie Marthe Blanc. He became a lawyer and politician, infamous for his many fights against the abolition of slavery and amelioration policies. At the beginning of the 19th century he helped found the ''Société royale des Arts et des Sciences de l'île Maurice'', the ''Bank of Mauritius'' and the first 'independent' and daily newspaper in Mauritius, ''Le Cernéen'', after the Portuguese name for the island, in which he published many virulently racist tracts against Blacks and people of colour. Marie Leblanc
Marie Leblanc (1867–August 14, 1915) is a Mauritian writer, best known for her work as an editor of literary journals and other periodicals, as a novelist, and as a translator. Early life Marie Leblanc was born in 1867, during a period when Mauritius was a British colony. Much of her life is a mystery to historians, though they were able to determine that she never married. It is not clear whether she belonged to the white Franco-Mauritian elite or to the mixed Gens de couleur or Mauritian Creoles community, in part because there are no surviving photographs of her. She had a sister, Julia, who was disabled and died in 1918, and possibly a brother, Eugène Gabriel, who died in 1879 at age 32. Angelique Frances Meunier (born 14 February 1985), known professionally as Havana Brown or DJ Havana Brown, is an Australian DJ, singer, record producer, songwriter and dancer. Charles Adrien Prosper Caïez d'Épinay (13 July 1836 – 23 September 1914) was a French sculptor and caricaturist (under the name Nemo). Many of his clients were from the nobility and royalty. He was sometimes referred to as the "sculpteur de souveraines" (sculptor of sovereigns). Firoz Abdul Cader Ghanty (14 August 1952 – 3 December 2019) was a Mauritian painter, poet, and activist. Biography Ghanty was born in Mauritius to a Persian-Gujarati father and a French mother. He held Marxist-Leninist ideas, and his involvement in protests led to arrests in 1975 and 1981. He lived in France from 1984 to 1996. Andrew Florent
Andrew Florent (24 October 1970 – 16 August 2016) was an Australian professional tennis player. Florent was born in Melbourne to parents who had migrated from Mauritius. He enjoyed most of his tennis success while playing doubles. During his career he won 3 doubles titles and finished runner-up an additional 10 times.
