Francis Taylor (1845 – 1 September 1915) was an English brewer and Liberal and Liberal Unionist politician. In 1885 Taylor was elected as Member of Parliament for South Norfolk as a Liberal, and in 1886 became a Liberal Unionist. He held the seat until 1898 when he retired through ill-health. 1885 United Kingdom General Election
The 1885 United Kingdom general election was held from 24 November to 18 December 1885. This was the first general election after an Representation of the People Act 1884, extension of the franchise and Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, redistribution of seats. For the first time a majority of adult males could vote and most constituencies by law returned a single member to Parliament, fulfilling one of the ideals of Chartism to provide direct single-member, single-electorate accountability. The 1898 South Norfolk by-election was a by-election held on 12 May 1898 for the British House of Commons constituency of South Norfolk. The election was triggered by the resignation on grounds of ill-health of the sitting Liberal Unionist Party former Liberal Member of Parliament (MP), Francis Taylor. The result of the election was a clear win for Arthur Wellesley Soames the Liberal candidate over his Unionist opponent. Arthur Wellesley Soames (30 November 1852 – 2 November 1934) was a British Liberal Party (UK), Liberal politician and architect. Family and education Soames was born in Brighton, the son of William Aldwin Soames.
