Francis T. Anderson
Francis Thomas Anderson, Sr. (December 11, 1808 – November 30, 1887) was a 19th-century American lawyer, politician and slaveowner, who served in the Virginia House of Delegates during the American Civil War and later served on the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia. Early and family life Born in Botetourt County, Virginia to farmer, soldier and one-term delegate William Anderson (1763-1834) and his wife, the former Anna Thomas (d. 1848), who had married in 1796. Taught first by his mother, Anderson later attended Curtis Alderson's school at Ben Salem in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Later Anderson attended the Fincastle Classical School in the Botetourt county seat for several years before enrolling in Washington College in Lexington, Rockbridge County, from which he graduated at the age of nineteen. This is a list of past and present judges of the Supreme Court of Virginia. The court's name was the Supreme Court of Appeals until it was changed in 1971.The Constitution of 1971 designated the court only as the Supreme Court. All prior constitutions, beginning with the Constitution of 1776, designated the court as the Supreme Court of Appeals. Members were titled Judge until a 1928 constitutional amendment changed the title to Justice and designated the presiding member Chief Justice. Current justices The court presently is made up of seven justices, each elected by a majority vote of both houses of the General Assembly for a term of twelve years. William Alexander Anderson (May 11, 1842 – June 21, 1930) was a Virginia lawyer, Confederate soldier and Democratic politician, who served in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly, twice won election as Attorney General of Virginia, and also served as rector of his alma mater, Washington & Lee University. Anderson, who by 1855 had moved his family to Lexington in Rockbridge County, Virginia, to become rector of his alma mater, Washington College (that became Washington & Lee University in his lifetime).
