Francis Moore (astrologer)
Francis Moore (29 January 1657 – 1715) was an English physician and astrologer who wrote and published what later became ''Old Moore's Almanack''. He was born into poverty in Bridgnorth, reputedly in one of the cave dwellings in the vicinity of St Mary's Steps. Moore was self-educated, learning to read by himself, and became a physician and astrologer. He served at the court of Charles II of England. Francis Moore (barrister)
Sir Francis Moore (1558 – 20 November 1621) was a prominent Jacobean barrister and Member of Parliament. Life He was born the posthumous son of Edward Moore, a yeoman of East Ilsley in Berkshire and educated at Reading School and St John's College, Oxford. He became an eminent barrister, working in the Middle Temple, but spent his family life at South Fawley Manor in Berkshire. Moore was appointed counsel and under-steward to Oxford University, of which he was created M.A. on 30 Oct. 1612. In Parliament, he was a frequent speaker, and is supposed to have drawn the well-known statute of Charitable Uses which was passed in 1601. The conveyance known as lease and release was his invention which remains one of two main ways to extend a lease, each with financial and physical demise advantages and disadvantages. Francis Moore (baptized 1708, died in or after 1756) was a British travel writer of the 18th century. Moore was born in Worcester, England, but few details are known about his early life. He came into prominence after publishing ''Travels into the Inland Parts of Africa'' in 1738. The abolitionist Thomas Clarkson attributed his commitment to the anti-slavery cause to reading the few experts on Africa of the time, including Moore. Account of Africa Moore was appointed a writer (i.e., clerk) by the Royal African Company in 1730 and sailed for the company's Gambia River entrepôt on July of that year. He left the region in April 1735 after also serving as a factor (agent) for the company. Moore was one of the first Englishmen to travel into the interior of Africa, serving in and visiting numerous towns and trading posts along the Gambia River from its mouth to the Guinea Highlands, hundreds of miles inland. Francis Moore (ice Hockey)
Francis William "Dinty" Moore (October 29, 1900 – January 21, 1976) was a Canadian goaltender who competed in ice hockey at the 1936 Winter Olympics. He was born in Port Colborne, Ontario and died in Morgan's Point, Ontario. Moore was a 1920 Memorial Cup Champion goalie with the Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers of the Ontario Hockey Association. He was a member of the 1936 Port Arthur Bearcats, which won the silver medal for Canada at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Following the Olympics, he played one season in the OHA Senior A League with the Toronto Goodyears. Moore was president of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1942 through 1945. He was made a lifetime member of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1962. Since 1976, the F. W. Francis Daniels Moore (April 17, 1913, in Evanston, Illinois – November 24, 2001, in Westwood, Massachusetts) was an American surgeon who was a pioneer in numerous experimental surgical treatments. Among his many achievements, he refined burn-treatment techniques, helped perform the world's first successful organ transplant (which involved a kidney), and accurately determined the volume of water and other nutrients in the human body using radioactive isotopes of those substances. In 1952, Moore became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was awarded the 1978 Lister Medal for his contributions to surgical science. The corresponding Lister Oration, given at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, was delivered on May 23, 1979, and was titled "Science and service".
