Francis Knollys (died 1643)
Sir Francis Knollys (1592–1643) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1624 and 1643. Knollys was the son of Sir Francis Knollys of Battle Manor at Reading in Berkshire and his wife, Lettice, daughter of John Barrett of Hanham in Gloucestershire. He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford in 1604 aged 12. He was awarded BA on 23 January 1607, and was a student of Middle Temple in 1610. In 1624 Knollys was elected Member of Parliament for Reading and was re-elected in 1625, 1626 and 1628. He sat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule without parliament. In April 1640, Knollys was re-elected MP for Reading in the Short Parliament with his father. He was re-elected for the Long Parliament in November 1640 and sat until his death in 1643. John Saunders (MP)
John Saunders (1590 – 29 April 1638) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1621 and 1629. Saunders was the son of Thomas Saunders of Woolstone in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) and his wife, Jane daughter of Thomas Cordery of Chute in Wiltshire. He matriculated at University College, Oxford on 22 May 1601 aged 11 and was awarded BA on 28 January 1608. He was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1616 and became Recorder of Reading, Berkshire. In 1621, he was elected Member of Parliament for Reading. He was re-elected MP for Reading in 1624, 1625, 1626 and 1628 and sat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule without parliament for eleven years. Saunders died in 1638 at the age of about 48. Saunders married Margaret Evelyn, daughter of John Evelyn of Godstone, Surrey. Knollys Family
Knollys, Knolles or Knowles (), the name of an English family descended from Sir Thomas Knollys (died 1435), Lord Mayor of London, possibly a kinsman of the celebrated general Sir Robert Knolles. The next distinguished member of the family was Sir Francis Knollys or Knowles (c. 1514–1596), English statesman, son of Sir Robert Knollys, or Knolles (died 1521), a courtier in the service and favour of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Robert had also a younger son, Sir Henry, who took part in public life during the reign of Elizabeth I and who died in 1583. From the time of Sir Francis, the family were associated with Greys Court at Rotherfield Greys and Caversham Park, then in Oxfordshire, as well as the nearby town of Reading in Berkshire, where the family's private chapel could once be seen in the church of St Laurence.
