Francis Johnston (architect)
Francis Johnston (1760 – 14 March 1829) was an Irish architect, best known for building the General Post Office (GPO) on O'Connell Street, Dublin. Life Johnston was born in Armagh, Ireland, son of William Johnston, also an architect, and studied architecture. He practised in Armagh, and then lived in Drogheda from 1786 before moving to Dublin about 1793. In 1805, he was appointed to the Board of Works as an architect. In 1824 he was made president of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts which had been founded the previous year, and he provided headquarters for the academy in Lower Abbey Street at his own expense. Works Two early projects were the completion of Rokeby Hall and Ballymakenny Church, Co. Louth, to the designs of Thomas Cooley in whose office he first trained. Francis Earl Johnston
Brigadier General Francis Earl Johnston, (1 October 1871 – 7 August 1917) was a New Zealand-born British Army officer of the First World War, who served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Born in Wellington, he was educated in England. Joining the British Army, he served with the Prince of Wales's North Staffordshire Regiment in the Sudan and later in the Second Boer War in South Africa. In New Zealand on secondment to the New Zealand Military Forces when the First World War began, he was posted to the NZEF as commander of the New Zealand Infantry Brigade. He led the brigade through most of the Gallipoli Campaign. Later, on the Western Front, he commanded the 1st Infantry Brigade and, for a brief period, the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Francis Featherstonhaugh Johnston ( ) was the third Bishop of Egypt from 1952 until 1958. Johnston served continuously in the Middle East from 1916 to 1957. Born on 21 April 1891 and educated at Reigate Grammar School and Hatfield College, Durham, he was ordained in 1915. After a curacy at All Saints, Fishponds, Bristol he was a Temporary Chaplain to the Forces. He had been appointed in 1915 as one of the youngest TCFs:the Chaplain-General described him as 'young, strong, bright personality'. He served in France, Salonica and then Palestine After World War I he was Chaplain of Port Said and then Archdeacon of Egypt before his elevation to the episcopate.
