Count Francis von Jenison zu Walworth ( Francis Jenison) Justice of the Peace, JP (20 January 1732 – 30 June 1799), was a British landowner who settled in the Electoral Palatinate. Early life Jenison was born on 20 January 1732 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was baptised into a prominent English Catholic family at Heighington, County Durham, Heighington in County Durham. He was a son of John Jenison (d. 1759) and Elizabeth ( Sandford) Jenison (d. 1773) of Low Walworth, in County Durham. His brothers John and James both became a Jesuit priests and Francis inherited the family estate. His paternal grandparents were John Jenison (a great-grandson of Thomas Jenison of Walworth Castle and Gerard baronets, Sir Thomas Gerard of Bryn Hall, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Bryn) and Sarah ( Williams) Jenison, of Hereford. A justice of the peace (JP) is a judicial officer of a lower or ''puisne'' court, elected or appointed by means of a commission ( letters patent) to keep the peace. In past centuries the term commissioner of the peace was often used with the same meaning. Depending on the jurisdiction, such justices dispense summary justice or merely deal with local administrative applications in common law jurisdictions. Justices of the peace are appointed or elected from the citizens of the jurisdiction in which they serve, and are (or were) usually not required to have any formal legal education in order to qualify for the office. Some jurisdictions have varying forms of training for JPs.
