Francis Gordon Wilson
Francis Gordon Wilson (27 November 1900 – 23 February 1959) was an Australian born, New Zealand architect. Wilson oversaw the design of New Zealand’s state housing programme from the 1930s onwards. He was the New Zealand Government Architect at the time of his death. Early life and education Wilson was born on 27 November 1900 in Subiaco, a district of Perth, Western Australia to Mary Catherine (nee O’Hagan) and Francis "Frank" John Wilson. His father was a New Zealander by birth while his mother was of Irish descent. The couple had a second son, Leslie, who was born in 1902. The family moved to New Zealand to attend a family reunion and due to the possibility of Wilson’s father obtaining the commission to design the Palmerston North Opera House. The family moved to New Zealand in 1903, and made their home in Wellington. Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. Gordon Wilson Flats
Gordon Wilson Flats is a residential building in central Wellington, completed in 1959. The building was owned by Housing New Zealand and housed 131 people. It is currently owned by Victoria University of Wellington, and is unoccupied pending a decision on its future. The Terrace Flats was renamed in honour of government architect Gordon Wilson who died in its final year of construction. Use as social housing: 1959–2013 The foundation stone for the building was laid on 6 August 1957, with completion in 1959. The complex housed around 130 people. Earthquake assessment An engineering firm first reported concerns about the building in April 2010. A later assessment determined that a large person falling on a balcony could cause masonry façades to fall off the building. Housing New Zealand was more concerned about strong wind or an earthquake event, however, and decided to relocate tenants to avoid any problems. Fergus Sheppard
Fergus George Frederick Sheppard (1908 – 1997) was a New Zealand architect, who served as the New Zealand Government Architect, chief government architect from 1959 until his retirement in 1971. During his time in this capacity he was involved with the design of the Beehive (New Zealand), Beehive, among hundreds of other public buildings. Personal life Fergus Sheppard was born in 1908 in Auckland, the youngest of two, and son of bootmaker Lewis George Frederick Sheppard and Lillian Gertrude Sheppard (née Green), both first generationers to be born in New Zealand. He attended Auckland Grammar School, Auckland Grammar, and then studied at University of Auckland, Auckland University. In 1938, he married Marjorie Joan Targuse (1912 – 2008), daughter of Violet Targuse. They had four sons, one of whom was also an architect. Robert Matthew
Sir Robert Hogg Matthew, OBE FRIBA FRSE (12 December 1906 – 2 June 1975) was a Scottish architect and a leading proponent of modernism. Early life & studies Robert Matthew was the son of John Fraser Matthew (1875–1955) (also an architect, and the partner of Sir Robert Lorimer) and his wife, Annie Broadfoot Hogg. From 1920, the family lived at 43 Minto Street ironically the epitome of Georgian classicism rather than modern architecture. The High Commission of New Zealand (Māori: ''Te Kāinga Māngai Kāwanatanga o Aotearoa i Rānana'') in London is the diplomatic mission of New Zealand in the United Kingdom. It is housed in a skyscraper known as New Zealand House on Haymarket, London, off Pall Mall. As well as containing the offices of the High Commissioner, the building also hosts the New Zealand consulate in London and the military attaché. History The site had been previously occupied by the Carlton Hotel, destroyed by a bomb during the Blitz. The design differed from the other diplomatic buildings of other Commonwealth countries in that it would be a modern skyscraper, designed by Sir Robert Matthew.
