Francis Fane Of Spettisbury
Francis Fane (5 December 1752 – 10 November 1813) of Spettisbury, near Blandford, Dorset, was a British Member of Parliament. Life Francis Fane was born on 5 December 1752, the third son of Henry Fane of Wormsley and his third wife Charlotte, daughter of Richard Luther of Miles, near Ongar in Essex. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, graduating in 1768. He was Member of Parliament for the constituency of Lyme Regis from 11 June 1777 until 1780 and for Dorchester in the Parliaments of 1790, 1796, 1802, 1806. Family Fane married Anne Cooke, who succeeded to her father's estates in Somerset and Dorset in 1777. They had no children. Spetisbury () is a village and civil parish in north Dorset, England, situated on the River Stour and the A350 road, southeast of Blandford Forum. In the 2011 census the civil parish had 224 households and a population of 555. Spetisbury village is a linear settlement, with mostly only one line of buildings adjacent to the A350 road. Dorset County Council has included the A350 in its response to the Major Roads Network (MRN) consultation, leading to anticipation of an A350 Spetisbury & Charlton Marshall bypass. Spetisbury is twinned with Le Vast, a village in the north-east of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France. Fane Family
Fane is an English surname of Welsh origins that belongs to a family who have produced a number of notable members. The family originated with Ivon Vane, who was a Welsh landowner and mercenary captain in the service of the Black Prince. Ivon Vane or John Fane, as he was known in English, was one of three captains who captured King John II of France at the battle of Poitiers 1356. He was knighted and shared in the ransom monies, which made him very wealthy. He settled in Kent and founded the two notable families of Fane, whose members became the Earls of Westmoreland, and Vane, who became the Earls of Darlington. Both families have golden gauntlets on their crest in memory of the surrender of King John.
