Francis Burton (1696–1744)
Francis Burton (1 December 1696 – 20 March 1744), from Buncraggy, County Clare, Ireland, was an Anglo-Irish politician and landowner. He was a Member of Parliament for Coleraine from 1721 until 1727 and sat subsequently in the Irish House of Commons for Clare from 1727 until his death in 1744. Background Burton was born in Buncraggy, the son of Francis Burton (1640–1714). The senior Francis Burton in 1698 was granted some territories in Dromelihy, County Clare (previously associated with the MacGorman family and the O'Brien Viscount Clare) in the aftermath of the Williamite War in Ireland and the overthrow of James II. The Burton family were of English origin; Francis' great-grandfather Thomas Burton (born 1590) was originally from Shropshire, England. Justice Of Chester
The Justice of Chester was the chief judicial authority for the county palatine of Chester, from the establishment of the county until the abolition of the Great Sessions in Wales and the palatine judicature in 1830. Within the County Palatine (which encompassed Cheshire, the City of Chester, and Flintshire), the Justice enjoyed the jurisdiction possessed in England by the Court of Common Pleas and the King's Bench. While the legal reorganisation of Wales and the Marches under Henry VIII diminished the authority of the Earl of Chester (i.e., the Prince of Wales) in the County Palatine, the authority of the Justice was, in fact, increased. In 1542, the Great Sessions were established in Wales, that country being divided into four circuits of three shires each. Denbighshire, Flintshire, and Montgomeryshire were made part of the Chester circuit, over which the Justice presided. Francis Conyngham, 2nd Baron Conyngham (born Francis Pierpoint Burton; 1725 – 22 May 1787) was an Irish peer and politician. Biography Burton was the eldest of two sons born to politician Francis Burton of County Clare by his wife, Mary (''née'' Conyngham). His paternal grandfather, also named Francis Burton (1640–1714), sat in the Irish parliament for Ennis from 1691 to 1714. Originally a branch of the Musards, Lords of Stavely, the Burton family settled in Richmond, Yorkshire after the Norman conquest. Sir Edward Burton (1442–1524), knighted by Edward IV in 1460 after the Second Battle of St Albans, settled in Longnor, Shropshire. His descendant Thomas Burton moved to Ireland in 1610. Francis Nathaniel Burton
Sir Francis Nathaniel Pierpoint Burton (26 December 1766 – 27 January 1832) was a British colonial administrator in Lower Canada and Irish politician. Burton was the younger of twin sons born to Francis Conyngham, 2nd Baron Conyngham (born Burton), and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Nathaniel Clements, in London. Henry Conyngham, 1st Marquess Conyngham, was his elder twin brother. In 1781, his father changed his surname to Conyngham upon the death of his maternal uncle, the Earl Conyngham, upon inheriting the Conyngham barony upon special remainder. Burton sat as Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons for Killybegs in 1790 and 1798 and County Clare from 1790 to the Act of Union in 1801. He sat then for County Clare in the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1808. He also held the rank of colonel in the militia. Francis Robert Burton
Francis Robert Burton (9 September 1840 – 4 July 1915) was a Public Servant in the early days of South Australia and is remembered for his work in improving penal treatment of delinquent boys. He was born the second son of Dr. Richard Francis Burton (ca.1810 – 24 February 1874), surgeon, of London. In 1852 the family migrated to South Australia and built a home "Bexley" in the Adelaide suburb of Sturt. Dr. Richard Francis Burton, aside from his private medical practice, from 1861 to 1874 provided subsidised medical aid to the poor of the Marion district. He served as Major in both the local and Adelaide regiments of the South Australian Volunteer Military Force, and was chairman of the District Council of Brighton from 1867 to 1873.
