The Francis Armstrong House (also known as Tower Apartments) is a historic house in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is locally significant as a fine example of Queen Anne style architecture. Description and history The -story, Queen Anne style house was built in 1892, and was designed by William Ward and constructed by Taylor, Romney & Armstrong as the home of Salt Lake City mayor Francis Armstrong. and The scheme of the house is thought to have been brought over by Armstrong from England in 1891, and is apparently based on an English home of the period. William Ward (Utah Architect)
William Ward (September 2, 1827 in Leicester, England – January 13, 1893 in Utah) was an architect, artist, and builder. Born in England, he converted to Mormonism Mormonism is the religious tradition and theology of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 1830s. As a label, Mormonism has been applied to various aspects of t ... and emigrated to Utah in 1850. While there, he carved Utah's block of limestone for the Washington Monument. In 1856, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and continued to live in the Midwest until returning to Utah in 1888. He died of lung fever in 1893, shortly after his wife succumbed to pneumonia. A couple of his works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Queen Anne Style Architecture
The Queen Anne style of British architecture refers to either the English Baroque architecture of the time of Queen Anne (who reigned from 1702 to 1714) or the British Queen Anne Revival form that became popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. In other English-speaking parts of the world, New World Queen Anne Revival architecture embodies entirely different styles. Francis Armstrong (mayor)
Francis "Frank" Armstrong (3 October 1839 – 15 June 1899) was the fifth mayor of Salt Lake City, serving from 1886 to 1890. Early life and career Armstrong was born in Northumberland, England on 3 October 1839. His family migrated to Canada in 1851 in Hamilton, Ontario. Armstrong went to the Richmond, Missouri in 1858 where he worked in a saw mill. He became friends with David Whitmer, one of the Three Witnesses for the Book of Mormon. Armstrong moved to Utah in 1861. He married his first wife Isabella Siddoway on 10 December 1864, and they resided in Salt Lake City permanently.
