Francesco Zucco
Francesco Zucco (, c.1570 – May 3, 1627) was an Italian painter. Zucco was born in Bergamo. The year of his birth is uncertain, but is known to be no later than 1575. Zucco studied art for a time in Cremona before returning to Bergamo; there he associated with painters such as Giovanni Paolo Cavagna and Enea Salmeggia. He painted both religious and secular pieces in a fairly traditional Baroque style; the ''Adoration of the Magi'' and ''Virgin and Child'' in the parish church of Levate are reminiscent of the work of Giovanni Battista Moroni. He was active for the duration of his career all around the Province of Bergamo, and painted works for churches in Albino, Alzano Lombardo, Brembate, Camerata Cornello, Capriate San Gervasio, Entratico, Foresto Sparso, Orio al Serio (a ''Virgin and Child''), Scanzorosciate, Villa di Serio, Ubiale Clanezzo, Peia, Suisio, Luzzana, Selvino, Sorisole, and Zandobbio. The Accademia Carrara, (), officially Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti di Bergamo, is an art gallery and an academy of fine arts in Bergamo, in Lombardy in northern Italy. Santa Maria Maggiore, Bergamo
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a major church in the upper town of Bergamo, Northern Italy. History According to the popular tradition, partially supported by documents, the church was built to comply with a vow made to the Virgin Mary in 1133 by the citizens of Bergamo to protect the city from the plague that was hitting northern Italy at that time. The inscription on the portal of the southern entrance (known as entrance of the "White Lions") says that the church was founded in 1137 on the site of another church from the 8th century dedicated to St Mary, which had been in turn erected over a Roman temple of the Clemence. The high altar was consecrated in 1185 and in 1187 the presbytery and the transept wings were completed. Due to financial troubles, the works dragged for the whole 13th–14th centuries.
