Francesc Layret
Francesc Layret i Foix (10 July 1880 in Barcelona – 30 November 1920 in Barcelona, Spain) was a Spanish politician and lawyer, Catalan nationalist and republican. He was assassinated in 1920 following the mass detention of several of his colleagues and other left-wing politicians and union leaders. Layret was a democrat, republican, Catalan nationalist and defender of social justice. His commitment to the reality of his time and of Catalonia led him to collaborate with the working-class movement and the libertarian movement, helping to make Barcelona internationally known as the "rose of fire" for his role of avant-guard in the fight against oppression and exploitation. History Of Catalonia
Catalonia was first settled during the Middle Palaeolithic era. Like the rest of the Mediterranean side of the Iberian Peninsula, the area was occupied by the Iberians and several Greek colonies were established on the coast before the Roman conquest. It was the first area of Hispania conquered by the Romans. It then came under Visigothic rule after the collapse of the western part of the Roman Empire. Martí Barrera
Martí Barrera i Maresma ( La Bisbal del Ampurdán, May 29, 1889 - Barcelona, April 26, 1972) was a Spanish politician, member of the Republican Left of Catalonia. He had also been an active member of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), director of the newspaper '' Solidaridad Obrera'' and minister of Labor in the Generalitat de Catalunya. He participated in the anarcho-syndicalist movement in the beginning of 20th century, through the CNT. At the time, he was also director of the newspaper ''Solidaridad Obrera''. In 1920 he was arrested and imprisoned in Mahón, in the Balearic islands, along with Lluís Companys, Salvador Seguí and about thirty other people, for their trade union activities.
