Frances Marshall Eagleson
Frances Marshall Eagleson (17 July 189818 May 1987) was an American education administrator and the first Black woman to graduate from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Early life and education Frances Marshall was born in Elizabeth, Kentucky, on July 17, 1898, and raised in Rushville, Indiana. Her father, Clinton B. Marshall, was a brick mason, and her mother was a homemaker. Marshall was the only "colored" student in her graduating class at Rushville High School in 1915. She enrolled at Indiana University in the fall of 1915, following the recommendation of her high school principal. At this time, Black students were not allowed to live on campus. Marshall initially lived with the Evans family, who had previously provided housing for Black students matriculating at the university. Marcellus Neal
Marcellus Neal (1868–1939) was the first African-American graduate of Indiana University in the United States. He graduated in 1895 with a B.A. in Mathematics. The Neal-Marshall Center on the Indiana University Bloomington campus is jointly named for Neal and Frances Marshall, the first African-American female student to graduate from Indiana University. Early years Neal was born in 1868 in Lebanon, Tennessee, but the family later moved to Greenfield, Indiana. Neal excelled academically at the local high school, graduating with distinction. Education and career Neal's high school academic record earned him a scholarship to Indiana University, where he enrolled in the fall of 1891. Tuskegee Airmen
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of primarily African American military pilots (fighter and bomber) and airmen who fought in World War II. They formed the 332d Fighter Group and the 477th Fighter Group, 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel.
