Fran Manushkin
Fran Manushkin (born November 2, 1942) is an American children's book author. She originally began as a children's book editor before transferring to an author. She attended the University of Illinois and Roosevelt University. Manushkin has authored over 20 children's books receiving high critical acclaim. She received the Notable Children's book citation award from the Association of Jewish Libraries in 2000, for her book ''Come Let Us Be Joyful: The Story of Hava Nagila''. Biography Upon graduating high school, Manushkin attended college and earned a teaching certificate. After four months of being a substitute teacher, she decided to live in New York City, and become a publisher. Manushkin worked for many publishers including Henry Holt and Company, Rinehart & Winston, Harper & Row, and Random House. The first book that she wrote was ''Baby'', and was published in 1972. Ned Bittinger
Edmund Stuart Bittinger (born July 4, 1951), better known by Ned Bittinger, is an American portrait painter and illustrator whose work includes the official Congressional portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Lindy Boggs for the US Capitol, as well as Secretaries of State James Baker and Lawrence Eagleburger's official State Department portraits. Early life and education Ned Bittinger was born in 1951 in Washington, D.C. He started painting and drawing in the third grade. When he was 13, his parents sent him to the Cochran Art School of Washington, D.C. He attended Landon School in Bethesda, MD, before leaving for Denison University in Ohio, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He then earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University. Uri Shulevitz ( he, אורי שולביץ; born February 27, 1935) is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. He won the 1969 Caldecott Medal for U.S. picture book illustration, recognizing ''The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship'', a Russian fairy tale retold by Arthur Ransome in 1916. Biography Uri Shulevitz was born in Warsaw, Poland, on February 27, 1935. During the bombing of Warsaw in 1939, a bomb fell into a stairwell of his apartment building when he was at home. The family fled from Poland and settled in Paris by 1947, then moved again to Israel in 1949. During the Sinai War in 1956, Mr. Shulevitz joined the Israeli Army. Later, he joined the Ein Gedi kibbutz. Shulevitz moved to New York City in 1959, studying painting at Brooklyn Museum Art School and working as an illustrator for a Hebrew children's book publisher. Dan Yaccarino (born May 20, 1965) is an American author, illustrator, and television producer, who is famous for his animated series, children's books and award-winning imagery. Biography Born in Montclair, NJ, Yaccarino was influenced by a combination of advertising, comic books, vintage animation, toys, and old films, spending his childhood immersed in drawing, writing, and making movies. ''The Matzah That Papa Brought Home'' is a 1995 fictional children's picture book by Fran Manushkin and illustrated by Ned Bittinger. It was originally published 1995, by Scholastic. It has been awarded Notable Children's Books by the American Library Association and Notable Book for Younger Readers from the Sydney Taylor Book Award. The story is written like a cumulative rhyme which tells the story of a family's celebration of the Passover Seder. Reception A starred review in ''Publishers Weekly'' compliments the book's "cumulative text" and "easy and unforced" rhymes and describes Bittinger's character studies as "gems". The School Library Journal described the text as "great fun" and the illustrations as "stellar".
