Four Lanes
Four Lanes ( kw, Peder Bownder) is a village in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom approximately south of Redruth at in the civil parish of Carn Brea. Pencoys is a smaller settlement which adjoins Four Lanes immediately to the south. St Andrew's Church was consecrated by Bishop Benson in 1881. Geography Four Lanes and Pencoys are on the upland plateau of the Carnmenellis granite batholith. Four Lanes village centre is 220 metres (720 feet) above sea level. The village is centred on The Square which is at a crossroads where the north-to-south B3297 Redruth-Helston road is intersected by unclassified lanes to Stithians (south-east) and Carnkie (north-west). Carn Brea ( kw, Karnbre) is a civil parish and hilltop site in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The population of Carn Brea including Bosleake and Church Coombe was 8,013 at the 2011 census. The hilltop site is situated approximately one mile (1.6 km) southwest of Redruth. The settlements of Bosleake, Brea, Broad Lane, Carn Arthen, Carn Brea Village, Carnkie, Four Lanes, Grillis, Illogan Highway, Pencoys, Penhallick, Piece, Pool, Tolskithy, Tregajorran, Treskillard, Tuckingmill and West Tolgus are in the parish. Joan Rendell
Joan Rendell MBE (1921 – 4 May 2010) was an English historian, writer (mainly on Cornish subjects), and phillumenist. Life Rendell was born in Plymouth, Devon, in 1921. She was the daughter of Gervase Rendell, born 1879 in Eastry, Kent. For most of her life her home was at Werrington, Cornwall. She was the author of more than 30 books, mainly on Cornish subjects. In September 1980 she was made a Bard of Gorsedh Kernow, taking the name ''Scryfer Weryn'' (Writer of Werrington). She was also an avid collector of matchbox covers and had an estimated collection of 300,000. Another interest was corn dolly making, on which she also wrote a book. Rendell died in a fire at her bungalow in Yeolmbridge, near Launceston, Cornwall, on 4 May 2010. Awards Rendell was awarded the MBE in 1958, for raising £100,000 in National Savings stamps. Brenda Wootton (née Ellery) (10 February 1928 – 11 March 1994) was a British folk singer and poet and was seen as an ambassador for Cornish tradition and culture in all the Celtic nations and as far as Australia and Canada. Early life and career Brenda Ellery was born in London, during a brief few months when her Cornish-born parents were there looking for work, but was back home in Cornwall at 6 months old.
