Foulbridge Preceptory
Foulbridge Preceptory was a preceptory of the Knights Templar at Foulbridge near Snainton in North Yorkshire, England of which there is little information. Upon the Dissolution of the Monasteries it possessed the estates of Foukebridge, Allerston, and Wydale. Richard de Hales is the only preceptor known by name due to his arrest in 1308. Foulbridge Farm now stands on the grounds of the former preceptory and has incorporated some remains of the latter. Foulbridge Farm (geograph 1989236)
Foulbridge (''Fuchebruge'', 12th century; ''Fulkebridge'', 12th, 16th century; ''Feukebrigg'', 13th-14th centuries; ''Foukebrigg'', 14th century; ''Fowbridge'', 14th-16th centuries) is the site of a manor about 2 miles south of the village of Snainton in North Yorkshire, England. The River Derwent flows nearby. Land in the area formerly belonged to Rievaulx Abbey and Foulbridge Preceptory was located here. In medieval times the manor belonged to the Templars, before John de Dalton took over ownership in 1308. History In 1177–81 and 1189–90, Foulbridge was a member of Settrington, but it afterwards passed into the overlordship of the Percys, Earls of Northumberland, and of the Mowbrays. John, Lord Mowbray died seised of the moiety of the manor, which must have escheated to him, in 1322, and in 1327 the demesne lands were said to have lain fallow since the Conquest. __NOTOC__ Snainton is a village and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2011 UK Census, Snainton parish had a population of 754, a decrease on the 2001 UK Census figure of 891. Notable people The actor Sir Ben Kingsley was born in Snainton. George Vasey the botanist was also born in the village. He was responsible for the integration of the United States Department of Agriculture.
