Fouad Elkoury
Fouad Elkoury ( ar, فؤاد الخوري; born 1952) is a Lebanese photographer and filmmaker. He is known for his photographs of war in Lebanon. Life and work ElKoury was born in Paris, the son of Lebanese architect Pierre el-Khoury. He studied architecture in London before switching to photography. He began photographing daily life during the Lebanese Civil War. He documented the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and found himself on the ''Atlantis,'' the ship aboard of which Yasser Arafat had been evacuated, producing an unexpected nautical photo essay. In 1989, ElKoury joined Rapho agency and spent one year in Egypt. In 1991, he was part of a collective photographic project in charge of capturing an ultimate image of Beirut city center's ruins, with Robert Frank, Raymond Depardon, René Burri, Josef Koudelka and Gabriele Basilico. Lebanese People
The Lebanese people ( ar, الشعب اللبناني / ALA-LC: ', ) are the people inhabiting or originating from Lebanon. The term may also include those who had inhabited Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains prior to the creation of the modern Lebanese state. The major religious groups among the Lebanese people within Lebanon are Shia Muslims (27%), Sunni Muslims (27%), Maronite Christians (21%), Greek Orthodox Christians (8%), Melkite Christians (5%), Druze (5.2%), Protestant Christians (1%). The largest contingent of Lebanese, however, comprise a diaspora in North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Africa, which is predominantly Maronite Christian. As the relative proportion of the various sects is politically sensitive, Lebanon has not collected official census data on ethnic background since 1932 under the French Mandate. Maison Européenne De La Photographie
The Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP; European house of photography), located in the historic heart of Paris, is a center for contemporary photographic art opened in February 1996. Location and activities The Hotel Henault de Cantobre, which was built in 1706, houses the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and is located at n. 5, Rue de Fourcy. It belongs to the City of Paris since 1914. The city authorities asked the Yves Lion firm of architects to undertake the restoration of the original building, as well as the addition of a new wing on the Rue de Fourcy. The façade overlooking the street, the period ironwork and the central staircase are all examples of classical architecture. World Press Photo Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 1955, the organization is known for holding an annual press photography contest. Gregory Buchakjian
Gregory Buchakjian (born 1971, in Beirut, Lebanon) is a Lebanese photographer, filmmaker and art historian. He studied at the Paris-Sorbonne University. He is the director of the School of Visual Arts at Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts ALBA and was co founder, with architects Pierre Hage Boutros and Rana Haddad, of Atelier de Recherche ALBA. From 2012 to 2019, Buchakjian has been a member of the advisory committee of the Saradar Collection, devoted to Lebanese art from the contemporary and modern periods. Work Buchakjian emerged in the art scene after the 2006 Lebanon War within a collective of Lebanese filmmakers. Lamia Ziadé
Lamia Ziadé (born in Beirut, Lebanon, 1968) is a Lebanese illustrator and visual artist. She grew up in Lebanon then moved to Paris and studied graphic arts at the Atelier Met de Penninghen. She lives and works in Paris. Life and work Lamia Ziadé began her career as a fabric designer for luxury brands, including Jean-Paul Gaultier and Issey Miyake. She developed her illustration practice through the publication of books, including children’s books and adult books with sometimes erotic content. In parallel to her drawings and illustrations, Ziadé began, in 2003, to work on larger scale artworks on erotic and humorous themes, with an esthetic inspired by Pop Art. Actes Sud is a French publishing house based in Arles. It was founded in 1978 by author Hubert Nyssen. By 2013, the company, then headed by Nyssen's daughter, Françoise Nyssen, had an annual turnover of 60 million euros and 60 staff members. Beirut Art Center is a space for exhibiting contemporary art in Beirut, Lebanon History Beirut Art Center opened to public in January 2009.
