Petalophyllaceae
Petalophyllaceae is a family of liverworts in the order Fossombroniales. Most species are thallose; that is, the plant is not differentiated into root, stem, and leaf. The thallus is typically small and bears lamellae on its dorsal Dorsal (from Latin ''dorsum'' ‘back’) may refer to: * Dorsal (anatomy), an anatomical term of location referring to the back or upper side of an organism or parts of an organism * Dorsal, positioned on top of an aircraft's fuselage * Dorsal co ... surface that give it a ruffled, leafy appearance.Crandall-Stotler, B.J., Stotler, R.E., and Long, D.G. 2009. Liverwort
The Marchantiophyta () are a division of non-vascular land plants commonly referred to as hepatics or liverworts. Like mosses and hornworts, they have a gametophyte-dominant life cycle, in which cells of the plant carry only a single set of genetic information. It is estimated that there are about 9000 species of liverworts. Some of the more familiar species grow as a flattened leafless thallus, but most species are leafy with a form very much like a flattened moss. Leafy species can be distinguished from the apparently similar mosses on the basis of a number of features, including their single-celled rhizoids. Leafy liverworts also differ from most (but not all) mosses in that their leaves never have a costa (present in many mosses) and may bear marginal cilia (very rare in mosses). Other differences are not universal for all mosses and liverworts, but the occurrence of leaves arranged in three ranks, the presence of deep lobes or segmented leaves, or a lack of clearly diff ...

Petalophyllum
''Petalophyllum'', or petalwort, is a genus of liverworts in the order Fossombroniales.Crandall-Stotler, B.J., Stotler, R.E., and Long, D.G. 2009. Phylogeny and classification of the Marchantiophyta. Edinburgh Journal of Botany, vo. 66, no. 1, p. 155-198. The plants are small, reaching lengths of up to about 15 mm (0.6 in), and thallose; that is, the plant is not differentiated into root, stem, and leaf. The thallus consists of a midrib flanked by two wings that bear leaf-like lamellae on their dorsal surface. The ventral surface bears rhizoids and two rows of small scales. ''Petalophyllum'' is dioicous. The gametangia are individually subtended by extensions of the dorsal lamellae. Antheridia occur in rows or clusters near the apex of the thallus. Archegonia are clustered and surrounded by a pesudoperianth. Asexual reproduction occurs via apical tubers. Species ''Petalophyllum'' lives primarily in seasonally dry habitats on disturbed soils and sand dunes in North Amer ...

''Fossombronia'' is a genus of liverworts belonging to the family Fossombroniaceae. The genus was first described by Giuseppe Raddi Giuseppe Raddi (9 July 1770 in Florence, Italy – 6 September 1829 the island of Rhodes) was an Italian botanist and curator at the Museum of Natural History of Florence. Fossombroniaceae
Fossombroniaceae (sometimes Codoniaceae) is a family of liverworts in the order Metzgeriales. Most species are small and thallose, but the thallus is typically ruffled to give the appearance of being leafy. The family was long called the Codoniaceae, Klinggr. 1858, because this is the older name. But since the genus ''Codonia'' is a synonym of '' Fossombronia'', the name Fossombroniaceae was proposed (and accepted) as a conserved name under the rules of the ICBN The ''International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants'' (ICN) is the set of rules and recommendations dealing with the formal botanical names that are given to plants, fungi and a few other groups of organisms, all those "trad ....
