Foshee, Alabama
Foshee is an unincorporated community in Escambia County, Alabama, United States between Brewton and Pollard on U.S. Route 29. Foshee was founded as a sawmill town and named after Stewart J. Foshee, who owned several sawmills in Escambia County. Russell A. Alger and Martin Sullivan founded the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company in the late 1890s and began logging around Foshee. They used lumber from the mill to build a new sawmill in Florida, which eventually grew into the town of Century. A post office was operated in Foshee from 1914 to 1924. Pollard is a town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. It was the first established county seat of Escambia County, from its creation in 1868 until 1883, when it lost that distinction to Brewton. At the 2020 census, the population was 128. Walter Edward "Big Ed" Morris (December 7, 1899 – March 3, 1932) was an American baseball player who was murdered. He was a starting pitcher in Major League who played in five seasons from to . Listed at , 185 lb., he batted and threw right-handed. Early career A native of Foshee, Alabama, Morris entered the majors in August 1922 with the Chicago Cubs, appearing for them in 12 innings of relief and did not have a decision. While pitching in the minors for Montgomery, he threw a no-hitter against Hershey. Morris returned to the major leagues in 1928, this time with the Boston Red Sox.
