Forward (statue)
''Forward'' is an 1893 bronze statue by American sculptor Jean Pond Miner Coburn depicting an embodiment of Wisconsin's "Forward" motto. The 1996 replica was located at the Wisconsin State Capitol grounds at the top of State Street before it was vandalized in 2020. The statue often is misidentified with the ''Wisconsin'' statue on top of the Capitol dome. History During the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, Miner and Helen Farnsworth Mears were named artists-in-residence at the Wisconsin Building. At that time, Miner was commissioned to create a work of art representing the state. She created ''Forward''; "Forward" is the motto of the state of Wisconsin. A souvenir pamphlet from the Exposition described the statue as representing "a female figure standing upon the prow of a boat, the figurehead of which is 'Old Abe.' ''Hans Christian Heg'' is a statue by Paul Fjelde that was cast in 1925 and installed at the Wisconsin State Capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin, United States in 1926. The bronze statue depicting the Union soldier and abolitionist Hans Christian Heg was torn down by rioters, decapitated and thrown into a lake in June 2020. Jean Pond Miner Coburn
Jean Pond Miner Coburn (1866–1967) was born in Menasha, Wisconsin. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and is most notable for her work ''Forward''. Early life Jean Pond Miner was born in Menasha, Wisconsin on the 8th July 1866. Her parents were Rev. H. A. Miner, a Congregationalist clergyman and Harriet Pond Rice. In her early life the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin. During her education she was known among her classmates as a strong artist. After two years as a special student in Downer College, she went to Chicago and began her art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago with Lorado Taft, where she found particular interest in sculpture. After working only three months she took the second honors of the institution. Soon after, she was sought as an instructor, and at the end of the year accepted a position as student teacher.
