Forton is a village and civil parish in the Wyre district of the English county of Lancashire near the Forest of Bowland. It is near the A6 road, between the city of Lancaster and the town of Garstang. Its population as measured at the 2011 Census is 1,213. It has one school, Forton Primary School, several churches and one pub, the New Holly. Wyre is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. The population of the non-metropolitan district at the 2011 census was 107,749. The district borders the unitary authority area of Blackpool as well as the districts of Lancaster, Ribble Valley, Fylde and Preston. The council is based in Poulton-le-Fylde. The district is named after the River Wyre, which runs through the district. The district is a rare contemporary example of a non-contiguous local government area. There are no road or rail connections between the parts of the borough divided by the River Wyre, and it is necessary to travel through the Fylde district in order to travel between the two divided parts of Wyre, or else use the passenger ferry between Fleetwood and Knott End. Cockerham is a small village and civil parish within the City of Lancaster district in Lancashire, England. It is south of Lancaster and north-northwest of Preston. Lying on the River Cocker, at the estuary of the River Lune, the parish had a population of 671 at the 2011 Census. Cockerham has lain within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire since the Middle Ages, having previously formed a township and parish within the hundred of Lonsdale. The River Wyre is a river in Lancashire, England, United Kingdom, which flows into the Irish Sea at Fleetwood. It is approximately 28 miles (45 km) in length. The river is a County Biological Heritage Site and has a sheltered estuary which, from its northwest corner, penetrates deep into the almost square peninsula of the Fylde. Etymology The name ''Wyre'' is of pre-Roman, likely if specific, Common Brittonic origin. It may be derived from ''*wiΣ-'', a form of the element ''*wei'', with a basic sense of "flowing", with the suffix ''–urā''. The River Wyre possibly shares its etymology with other river names, including the Wear in County Durham and the Quair Water in Scotland. Lancaster Canal
The Lancaster Canal is a canal in North West England, originally planned to run from Westhoughton in Lancashire to Kendal in south Cumbria (historically in Westmorland). The section around the crossing of the River Ribble was never completed, and much of the southern end leased to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, of which it is now generally considered part. Of the canal north of Preston, only the section from Preston to Tewitfield near Carnforth in Lancashire is currently open to navigation for , with the canal north of Tewitfield having been severed in three places by the construction of the M6 motorway, and by the A590 road near Kendal.
