Fort William (provincial Electoral District)
Fort William was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of Ontario, active from 1908 to 1999. The district was created out of the former Fort William and Lake of the Woods district for the 1908 election, serving the city of Fort William and the surrounding area. When the city of Fort William merged with the neighbouring city of Port Arthur in 1970 to create the current city of Thunder Bay, the district of Fort William and the corresponding electoral district of Port Arthur continued as separate districts serving the new city. Thunder Bay District, Ontario
Thunder Bay District is a district and census division in Northwestern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. The district seat is Thunder Bay. In 2016, the population was 146,048. The land area is ; the population density was . Most of the district (93.5%) is unincorporated and part of the Unorganized Thunder Bay District. History Thunder Bay District was created in 1871 by provincial statute from the western half of Algoma District, named after a large bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. Its northern and western boundaries were uncertain until Ontario's right to Northwestern Ontario was determined by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Until about 1902 it was often called Algoma West from the name of the provincial constituency established in 1885. Harry Mills (politician)
Henry Mills (October 11, 1873 – December 20, 1959), better known as Harry Mills, was a locomotive engineer before being elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as the Labour candidate for the riding of Fort William in the October 1919 election. He was appointed to the cabinet as its first Minister of Mines and served until his defeat in the general election of June 1923. Biography Born in Wales in 1873, and later raised in Birmingham, England, he commenced work about 1893 as a wiper in the Canadian Pacific Railway roundhouse at Fort William and rose through the ranks from fireman to locomotive engineer. He was active in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and was elected to the Fort William Board of Education serving as its chairman during 1917–1919. Construction of the Fort William Collegiate Institute began in 1919 under his leadership. Lyn McLeod
Lyn McLeod (born ) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. She served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1987 to 2003. McLeod was a cabinet minister in the Liberal government of David Peterson from 1987 to 1990, and served as leader of the Ontario Liberal Party from 1992 to 1996. Mickey Hennessy
Michael Patrick "Mickey" Hennessy (August 8, 1915 — March 5, 1991) was a boxer and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1977 to 1987, as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. Background Hennessy was born in Montreal, Quebec, and educated at St. Michael's High School and Luke Callaghan High School. During the 1930s, he was a national boxing champion in Canada and was inducted to the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1977. Hennessy was a Roman Catholic, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Iain Francis Angus (born June 1, 1947) is a Canadian politician, who has served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and the House of Commons of Canada, as well as on Thunder Bay City Council. Then an employee with the city of Thunder Bay, Angus entered electoral politics in the 1975 provincial election as the Ontario New Democratic Party candidate in Fort William. He served until the 1977 election, when he was defeated by Mickey Hennessy. He returned to work for the city, unsuccessfully standing as a federal New Democratic Party candidate in the 1979 and 1980 elections for the electoral district of Thunder Bay—Atikokan. On his third campaign as a federal candidate, he was elected in the 1984 election, winning over Progressive Conservative candidate Ken Boshcoff by a margin of 2,675 votes. Charles Winnans Cox (July 7, 1882 - March 28, 1958) was a politician and timber contractor in Ontario, Canada.
