Fort Piqua Plaza
Fort Piqua Plaza is a historic hotel building (Fort Piqua Hotel) renovated for public uses including a library in downtown Piqua, Ohio. It was designed by Joseph W. Yost who is known for his many county courthouses, churches, and other major public buildings in and around Ohio and later New York City. Fort Piqua Hotel is located at 114 W. Main St. It was built in 1890–91 in Late Victorian architecture, Late Victorian style. It has also been known as the Plaza Hotel and as the Favorite Hotel. It was built as "The Plaza Hotel", a -story Richardsonian Romanesque-style rock-faced building developed by the partnership of Orr and Statler. It was opened as a hotel in 1892. Piqua ( ) is a city in Miami County, southwest Ohio, United States, 27 miles north of Dayton. The population was 20,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded as the village of Washington in 1807 by a soldier under Gen. Anthony Wayne. History Etymology The word 'Piqua' is believed to be derived from a Shawnee language phrase: ''Othath-He-Waugh-Pe-Qua,'' translated as "He has risen from the ashes," related to a legend of the people. Victorian architecture is a series of architectural revival styles in the mid-to-late 19th century. ''Victorian'' refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), called the Victorian era, during which period the styles known as Victorian were used in construction. However, many elements of what is typically termed "Victorian" architecture did not become popular until later in Victoria's reign, roughly from 1850 and later. Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886).
