Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Company
The Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Company is a volunteer fire department that provides fire protection and emergency medical services to Fort Johnson and Amsterdam New York. History FJVFC was founded in 1935, and manages two stations. In 1995, a fire erupted in the home of one of the department's volunteers. David Grandy, a lieutenant of the fire company, his wife Stephanie Grandy, also an active firefighter at the department, and their three children, were killed in the fire. A monument was dedicated to the Grandy family behind station 2 in Amsterdam. In 2009, the fire company petitioned for a bill to allow non-resident members of their company, sponsored by Senator Hugh Farley. The bill passed in July 2009, making the FJVFC the 24th fire department in the state of NY to receive such an exemption. Fort Johnson, New York
Fort Johnson (formerly known as Akin) is a village in Montgomery County, New York, United States located on the north side of the Mohawk River in the town of Amsterdam. The population was 490 at the 2010 census. History Around 1710, early Palatine Germans began trying to settle here. Most were working in an English camp along the Hudson to pay back their passage by ship from London. In 1716, the Mohawk sold a portion of the land to Philip Groat (it is now in the eastern part of the Town of Amsterdam). This part of New York was Mohawk nation, Mohawk territory for centuries before European colonization. Hugh Farley
Hugh T. Farley (born November 26, 1932) is an American attorney, professor and Republican politician from Schenectady County, New York. He served as a member of the New York Senate from 1977 until his 2016 retirement. Early life and family Farley was born in Watertown, New York and raised in Indian Lake, New York. He graduated from high school in Watertown. Farley served in the U.S. Army and then was a high school teacher in Syracuse, New York and Maryland.
