The Fort Hays State Tigers are the athletic teams that represent Fort Hays State University, located in Hays, Kansas, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the NCAA Division II ranks, primarily competing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) for most of its sports since the 2006–07 academic year; while its men's soccer team competes in the Great American Conference (GAC). Fort Hays State University
Fort Hays State University (FHSU) is a public university in Hays, Kansas. It is the fourth-largest of the six state universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, with a total enrollment of approximately 15,100 students. History FHSU was founded in 1902 as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School, which is now known as Emporia State University. The institution was originally located on the grounds of Fort Hays, a frontier military outpost that was closed in 1889. The university served the early settlers' needs for educational facilities in the new region. The first building closer to Hays was completed in 1904, at which time the university moved to its present location. The modern campus is still located on a portion of the former military reservation from the fort. Andrew Frank Schoeppel
Andrew Frank Schoeppel (November 23, 1894 – January 21, 1962) was an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. He was the 29th governor of Kansas from 1943 to 1947 and a U.S. Senator from 1949 until his death. He was born in 1894 in Claflin, Kansas, and died in 1962 of abdominal cancer at the National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, Maryland. Early life and political career Schoeppel was born near Claflin, Kansas, to immigrant parents from Bohemia. He attended public school and the University of Kansas, but left college to join the Naval Air Service during World War I. Jim Gilstrap (May 11, 1942 – July 19, 2007) was an American football and Canadian football coach. He had 42-year coaching career, including two as head coach of the Ottawa Rough Riders and ten as an assistant to Mike Riley. Career Gilstrap began coaching in 1964 after graduating from Western Michigan University, coaching the defensive line at Southern Illinois University. From 1965 to 1966, he was the offensive line coach at Case Western. From 1967 to 1968, he was defensive line coach at Edinboro State. In 1969, he began a six-year tenure as Illinois State's offensive line coach. He then served as offensive line coach with the Kansas State Wildcats in 1977 and with the Western Michigan Broncos from 1978 to 1980. Ira Harlan "Sphinx" Van Cleave (July 30, 1888 – May 29, 1943) was an American football, basketball, baseball, and track and field coach, athletics administrator, and physical education instructor. Anthony C. Hobson (born March 29, 1959) is an American college women's basketball coach currently coaching at Fort Hays State University. Since Hobson took over at Fort Hays State, the programs as won a conference regular season championships and has appeared in three NCAA tournaments. Prior to his current post, Hobson was the head coach for his alma mater Hastings College from 2001 to 2008, where he led the school to three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national championships.
