Fornarina
Margarita Luti (also Margherita Luti or ''La Fornarina'', "the baker's daughter") was the mistress and model of Raphael. The story of their love has become "the archetypal artist–model relationship of Western tradition", yet little is known of her life. Of her, Flaubert wrote, in his ''Dictionary of Received Ideas'', "Fornarina. She was a beautiful woman. That is all you need to know.""Fornarina. C’était une belle femme; inutile d’en savoir plus long" Life According to Vasari, Raphael was a "very amorous man and affectionate towards the ladies"."Fu Rafaello persona molto amoroso, & affezzionata alle donne" He is said to have painted portraits of his mistress and to have assigned the engraver il Baviera to serve as her page. When commissioned by Agostino Chigi to decorate the Villa Farnesina, he was unable to dedicate himself properly to his work due to his infatuation - until she was allowed to come to live at his side. Again according to Vasari, it was Raphael's immoder ...

La Fornarina
The ''Portrait of a Young Woman'' (also known as ''La fornarina'') is a painting by the Italian High Renaissance master Raphael, made between 1518 and 1519. It is in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini, Rome. It is probable that the picture was in the painter's studio at his death in 1520, and that it was modified and then sold by his assistant Giulio Romano. Art-history tradition or legend identifies the woman as the ''fornarina'' ("baker" or "baker's daughter") Margherita Luti, Raphael's Roman lover who refused to marry him, though this identification has been questioned. An alternative view sees the work not as a portrait of a specific woman, but rather as Raphael's interpretation of a '' belle donne'' genre and a depiction of a courtesan. Still another interpretation identifies the figure as a witch. Description Description of painting The painting depicts a nude woman wearing a thin veil to cover her lower abdomen and is seen half coveri ...

Raphael
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, better known as Raphael (; or ; March 28 or April 6, 1483April 6, 1520), was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. List of works by Raphael, His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Renaissance Neoplatonism, Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. His father was court painter to the ruler of the small but highly cultured city of Urbino. He died when Raphael was eleven, and Raphael seems to have played a role in managing the family workshop from this point. He trained in the workshop of Perugino, and was described as a fully trained "master" by 1500. He worked in or for several cities in north Italy until in 1508 he moved to Rome at the invitation of the pope, to work on the Vatican Palace. He was given a series of important commissions there and elsewhere in the ...

Model (art)
An art model poses, often Nudity, nude, for visual artists as part of the creative process, providing a reference for the human body in a work of art. As an occupation, modeling requires the often strenuous 'Work (human activity), physical work' of holding poses for the required length of time, the 'aesthetic work' of performing a variety of interesting poses, and the 'Emotional labor, emotional work' of maintaining a socially ambiguous role. While the role of nude models is well-established as a necessary part of artistic practice, public nudity remains Social norm#Deviance from social norms, transgressive, and models may be vulnerable to stigmatization or exploitation. Artists may also have family and friends pose for them, in particular for works with costumed figures. Much of the public perception of art models and their role in the production of artworks is based upon mythology, the conflation of art modeling with fashion modeling or erotic performances, and representations o ...

''La velata'', or ''La donna velata'' ("The woman with the veil"), is a well known portrait by the Italian Renaissance painter Raffaello Sanzio, more commonly known as, Raphael. The subject of the painting appears in another portrait, ''La Fornarina'', and is traditionally identified as the ''fornarina'' (bakeress) Margherita Luti, Raphael's Roman mistress. Johann David Passavant
Johann David Passavant (18 September 1787 – 17 August 1861) was a German painter, curator and artist. Biography Passavant was born in 1787 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His interest in the arts was evident by an early correspondence with the artist Franz Pforr (1788–1812). He moved to Paris in 1809 to further his business interests. He returned to Frankfurt in 1824 where art history evermore occupied his interest. His ''Tour of a German artist in England'' (1833 in German; 1836 translated into English by Lady Eastlake) remains a significant source for art historians, as do his catalogues of old master prints, whose numbering is still followed by some collections. In the year 1839 he became Inspektor (curator) of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt. There he acquired important works in the prints and drawing area, mounted exhibitions, and taught. Passavant developed the three principal genres of art writing important for the next two centuries: the scholarly ...
