Formerly Known As Witte De With Center For Contemporary Art
Kunstinstituut Melly is a contemporary art gallery located in a former school building on Witte de Withstraat, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1990 and originally named after the street it was located on. It presents curated exhibitions, symposiums, live events, educational programs, and has a separate art literature publishing arm. In 2017, the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, as it was known, announced it would change its name in order to distance itself from its de facto namesake, the Dutch naval admiral Witte de With, and recognise the negative impacts of colonialism. Its new name, Kunstinstituut Melly, was announced in 2020, and references a sculpture by Canadian artist Ken Lum displayed on the exterior wall of the building entitled ''Melly Shum Hates Her Job'' (1989). Douglas Coupland (born 30 December 1961) is a Canadian novelist, designer, and visual artist. His first novel, the 1991 international bestseller '' Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture'', popularized the terms ''Generation X'' and ''McJob''. Jeremy Shaw
Jeremy Shaw (born 1977) is a Canadian visual artist based in Berlin, Germany. Shaw's art deals with altered states and the cultural and scientific practices investigating transcendental experience, with recurring themes around belief-systems, drugs, neuroscience, subculture, dance and evolution. His works often combine elements of cinema vérité, conceptual art, music video, scientific research, and science fiction. Mark Leckey
Mark Leckey (born 1964) is a British contemporary artist. His found object art and video pieces, which incorporate themes of nostalgia and anxiety, and draw on elements of pop culture, span several works and exhibitions. Simon Denny (born 1982, in Auckland) is a contemporary artist based in Berlin. He represented New Zealand at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Since 2018 he is a professor for time based media at the HFBK Hamburg. Dineo Seshee Bopape is a South African multimedia artist.
