Carlo Forlanini
Carlo Forlanini (11 June 1847 – 26 May 1918) was a medical doctor and professor at the Universities of Turin and Pavia. He was also the inventor of artificial pneumothorax, which was the primary treatment method of pulmonary tuberculosis for the first half of the 20th century and remained in use for severe cases of tuberculosis into the 1970s. Early life Carlo Forlanini was born in Milan on 11 June 1847, the eldest of four brothers and one sister. His father, Giuseppe Forlanini, was a physician belonging to a bourgeosie family of Milan. His mother, Marianna Rossi, died of pulmonary phthisis. Forlanini attended secondary school in Como, received his pre-doctoral education at Calchi Taeggi in Milan, then attended the Borromeo College at the University of Pavia. Enrico Forlanini (13 December 1848 – 9 October 1930) was an Italian engineer, inventor and aeronautical pioneer, known for his works on helicopters, aeroplanes, hydrofoils and dirigibles. He was born in Milan. His older brother Carlo Forlanini was a physician. Early life Enrico Forlanini was born to Francesco Forlanini, a notable physician and director of the ''Ospedale Fatebenefratelli'' in Milan. After elementary school he attended one of the three Milan ''Regie Scuole Tecniche'', in 1863 he entered the Military College of Turin. In 1866 he enrolled at the Military Academy of Turin, and become a Lieutenant of Engineers. Enrico enrolled in the ''Scuola di Applicazione Artiglieria e Genio'' (Application School of Artillery and Engineers) in Turin in 1868. Upon graduation in 1870, Forlanini was assigned to Casale Monferrato, where he was able to work in the police station's workshop. He began working on a systematic testing of propellers. Forlanini is a district ("quartiere") of Milan, Italy. It is part of the Zone 4 of Milan, Zone 4 administrative division, located east of the city centre. The northern boundary of the district is eponymous Viale Enrico Forlanini, which is the main avenue connecting Milan to the Linate Airport. The other boundaries of the Forlanini district are the Milan belt railway and the Tangenziale Est ring road. Forlanini is a residential district, with 1960s apartment blocks being the most common type of buildings.
