Forgotten Chicago
Forgotten Chicago is an organization that seeks to discover and document little-known elements of Chicago's infrastructure, architecture, neighborhoods, and general cityscape, existing or historical. The organization exposes many of these often-overlooked elements of Chicago's built environment to a wide audience to increase interest in their preservation. In addition to conducting research and publishing articles on its website, Forgotten Chicago also leads neighborhood walking tours and holds free presentations at area libraries. Forgotten Chicago has received many accolades including being named one of Chicago Magazine's 171 best Chicago websites in February 2008 and is featured in the Chicago Tribune, The Northwest Indiana Times, Time Out Chicago, and local radio. Their web presence underwent a major re-design in January 2009 with feature improvements, revised and updated content, and more ways for the public to get involved with the organization through Twitter and Facebook ... Forgotten NY
Forgotten New York is a website created by Kevin Walsh in 1999, chronicling the unnoticed and unchronicled aspects of New York City such as painted building ads, decades-old castiron lampposts, 18th-century houses, abandoned subway stations, trolley track remnants, out-of-the-way neighborhoods, and flashes of nature hidden in the midst of the big city. In 2003, HarperCollins approached Walsh with the idea of turning the website into a book; ''Forgotten New York'' was published in September 2006. Walsh released ''Forgotten Queens'', a collaboration with the Greater Astoria Historical Society, in December 2013 on Arcadia Books, is currently composing a book proposal for a second Forgotten New York book, and is working on mounting online tours for the fall and winter of 2021-2022. On March 2, 2015, the Guides Association of New York City awarded Forgotten New York its first Outstanding New York Website award. History Of Chicago
Chicago has played a central role in American economic, cultural and political history. Since the 1850s Chicago has been one of the dominant metropolises in the Midwestern United States, and has been the largest city in the Midwest since the 1880 census. The area's recorded history begins with the arrival of French explorers, missionaries and fur traders in the late 17th century and their interaction with the local Pottawatomie Native Americans. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was the first permanent non-indigenous settler in the area, having a house at the mouth of the Chicago River in the late 18th century. There were small settlements and a U.S. Army fort, but the soldiers and settlers were all driven off in 1812. Architectural History
The history of architecture traces the changes in architecture through various traditions, regions, overarching stylistic trends, and dates. The beginnings of all these traditions is thought to be humans satisfying the very basic need of shelter and protection. The term "architecture" generally refers to buildings, but in its essence is much broader, including fields we now consider specialized forms of practice, such as urbanism, civil engineering, naval, military, and landscape architecture.
