Forgacs Marine and Defence (Forgacs), former Forgacs Group, is a major Australian engineering and shipbuilding company. It has facilities at Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane and Gladstone. The company employs 1000 people. The Forgacs Group acquired Ullman Engineering in 1962 and in 1987, it acquired the Newcastle Floating Dock. Shipbuilder Carrington Slipways was acquired in 1997, and the Cairncross Dockyard facilities in Brisbane in 1999. Cairncross is used for commercial ship repair and includes one of the largest graving docks in Australasia. The dockyard can accommodate ships up to the Panamax sized class. Forgacs conducts refit and maintenance work for the Royal Australian Navy, including the repair and extensive conversion of the (LPA) ships, following their purchase from the United States Navy. A proprietary company, the characteristic of which is abbreviated as "Pty", is a form of privately held company in Australia, Namibia and South Africa that is either limited or unlimited. Forgacs Shipyard
Forgacs Shipyard is a shipbuilding company located at Tomago, New South Wales on the Hunter River. It was originally opened in 1957 by John Laverick at Carrington as Carrington Slipways, and built 45 ships between then and 1968. By 1972, the business required larger premises and moved to Tomago, not far from the Pacific Highway. The shipyard was purchased by Forgacs Engineering in 1997. Cairncross Dockyard
The Cairncross Dockyard was a shipyard beside the Brisbane River at Morningside, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It included one of Australia's largest graving docks with an 8.5 metre deep water access, capable of taking Panamax vessels of up to 85,000 dwt, up to 263 metres long x 33.5 metres wide. It is second in size only to the Royal Australian Navy's Captain Cook Graving Dock in Sydney. Construction of the dockyard began in 1942, and its graving dock opened in 1944.
