Fordham Rams Football Seasons
The following is a list of Fordham Rams football seasons for the football team that has represented Fordham University in NCAA competition during their years as a Division I-A/FBS program. Seasons Fordham, which had previously suspended football during the 1943-1945 seasons due to World War II, dropped the program entirely following the 1954 season. Students brought the sport back as a club team in 1964. The university again granted varsity status in 1970. The program played at the D-III level until finally regaining Division I status in 1989. 1941 Cotton Bowl Classic
The 1941 Cotton Bowl Classic was the fifth edition of the Dallas bowl game, which began in 1937, and featured the #6 Texas A&M Aggies and the #12 Fordham Rams. It was the first Cotton Bowl under Southwest Conference sponsorship and the first sold out game. Background This was A&M's third bowl game appearance, having played in the 1922 Dixie Classic (most famous for the birth of the 12th Man) and the 1940 Sugar Bowl. A&M was co-champions of the Southwestern Conference along with SMU, due to A&M losing to Texas, which cost them a shot at the national championship. 1949 Fordham Rams Football Team
The 1949 Fordham Rams football team represented Fordham University as an independent during the 1949 college football season. The Army Cadets hosted Vince Lombardi's former team, the Fordham Rams at Michie Stadium. One of the members of the Rams was Vince's brother, Joe Lombardi, who transferred to the school after Lombardi left. Tim Cohane, writer of '' Look'' magazine was a Fordham alumnus, and a friend of Army coach Earl Blaik. He pressured both teams to play each other. Cohane felt the game would help Fordham rise to national prominence. Herb Seidell, the Fordham captain, lost a tooth in the game. Several fights ensued and the media named the match, the Donnybrook on the Hudson. There were multiple penalties for unnecessary roughness. 1947 Fordham Rams Football Team
The 1947 Fordham Rams football team was an American football team that represented Fordham University as an independent during the 1947 college football season. In its second season under head coach Ed Danowski, the team compiled a 1–6–1 record and was outscored opponents by a total of 245 to Rams offense scored 44. After a winless 1946 season, Fordham boosters raised money for 30 new scholarships. In addition, the school made several additions to its coaching staff, including the hiring of Vince Lombardi. Lombardi was responsible for coaching the freshman team. In addition, he helped the varsity team implement the T-Formation on offense. Lombardi did this for a salary of $3,500 a year. Athletic director Jack Coffey stated that he thought Lombardi would one day become head coach of the varsity team. Ed Danowski
Edward Frank Danowski (September 30, 1911 – February 1, 1997) was an American football player who played quarterback and halfback in the National Football League (NFL). He grew up in Aquebogue, his father, Anton, was a Polish immigrant. Football career A graduate of Fordham University, Danowski played for the New York Giants for seven seasons (1934–1939, 1941). Although statistics are not kept for his record of wins and losses during his career, Danowski proved a worthy quarterback presence for seven seasons, with the Giants having just one losing season during his time with the team, as he served as the primary starter from 1935 to 1939, leading the Giants to four NFL Championship games (1934, 1935, 1938, 1939). Earl Walsh
Earl Francis Walsh (June 3, 1899 – June 21, 1961) was an American football player and coach. He served the head football coach at Fordham University in 1942, compiling a record of 5–3–1. From 1933 to 1941, Walsh was the backfield coach at Fordham under head coach Jim Crowley, a fellow alumnus of the University of Notre Dame. Walsh previously coached at Dowling College and at the Catholic Academy in Des Moines, Iowa Des Moines () is the capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa.
