Force11 Scholarly Communication Institute
The FORCE11 Scholarly Communication Institute (FSCI, pronounced ''fis-key'') is a week-long program first launched in 2017, which provides skill training, networking and collaboration opportunities on innovative mode of communicating research. As a global initiative by the Future of Research Communications and e-Scholarship (FORCE11), FSCI brings researchers, students, administrators, funders, librarians, publishers, and other informational professionals together to build up expertise through intensive training and hands-on collaborations. The aim of the FSCI is to teach students, faculty members, administrators, and librarians how to navigate this rapidly evolving world of scholarly, scientific, and research communication. In the words of former FORCE11 President Cameron Neylon (term 2016-2017), "the idea is that we all have as much to learn from each other, as we have to offer in terms of ideas and technology." FORCE11 is an international coalition of researchers, librarians, publishers and research funders working to reform or enhance the research publishing and communication system. Initiated in 2011 as a community of interest on scholarly communication, FORCE11 is a registered 501(c)(3) organization based in the United States but with members and partners around the world. Key activities include an annual conference, the Scholarly Communications Institute and a range of working groups. History FORCE11 grew out of the FORC Workshop held in Dagstuhl, Germany in August 2011. This meeting resulted in the collaborative creation of a white paper which summarized the problems of scholarly communication and proposed a vision to address them. Cameron Neylon
David Cameron Neylon is an advocate for open access and Professor of Research Communications at thCentre for Culture and Technologyat Curtin University. From 2012 - 2015 they were the Advocacy Director at the Public Library of Science. Education Neylon was educated at the University of Western Australia and the Australian National University where they were awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biophysics in 1999 for work on directed molecular evolution and DNA-binding specificity. Career In 2009 Neylon was a senior scientist at the ISIS neutron source of the Science and Technology Facilities Council. From 2012 to 2015 they served as director of advocacy at the Public Library of Science. They joined The Centre for Culture and Technology (CCAT) at Curtin University in 2015 as Professor of Research Communications. Digital Humanities Summer Institute
The Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) is an annual digital humanities training program held in June at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. DHSI now attracts over 600 participants for two weeks of courses, forum discussions, paper sessions, and unconferences. DHSI has an International Advisory Board. In both the past and present, major overarching themes of DHSI have included collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and the creation and cultivation of a larger Digital Humanities community beyond the structure of the typical academic environment. It has been especially noted that DHSI encourages opportunities for digital humanists at all stages of their careers, levels of expertise in the field, and roles in the contribution to the Digital Humanities to engage and network with each other.
