Formation (stratigraphy)
A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). It is the fundamental unit of lithostratigraphy, the study of strata or rock layers. A formation must be large enough that it can be mapped at the surface or traced in the subsurface. Formations are otherwise not defined by the thickness (geology), thickness of their rock strata, which can vary widely. They are usually, but not universally, tabular in form. They may consist of a single lithology (rock type), or of alternating beds of two or more lithologies, or even a heterogeneous mixture of lithologies, so long as this distinguishes them from adjacent bodies of rock. The concept of a geologic formation goes back to the beginnings of modern scientific geology. The term was used by ... Geologic Formations Of California
Geology () is a branch of natural science concerned with Earth and other Astronomical object, astronomical objects, the features or rock (geology), rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which they change over time. Modern geology significantly overlaps all other Earth science, Earth sciences, including hydrology, and so is treated as one major aspect of integrated Earth system science and planetary science. Geology describes the structure of the Earth on and beneath its surface, and the processes that have shaped that structure. It also provides tools to determine the Relative dating, relative and Geochronology, absolute ages of rocks found in a given location, and also to describe the histories of those rocks. By combining these tools, geologists are able to chronicle the geological history of the Earth as a whole, and also to demonstrate the age of the Earth. Geology provides the primary evidence for plate tectonics, the evolutionary history of life, and the Eart ... Puzosia
''Puzosia'' is a genus of desmoceratid ammonites, and the type genus for the Puzosiinae, which lived during the middle part of the Cretaceous, from early Aptian to Maastrichtian (125.5 to 70.6 Ma). The generic name comes from the Serbian words "Puž" (snail) and "oce/ose" (axis), gaining its name from the shell's snail-like appearance. Lytoceras
''Lytoceras'' is an ammonite genus that was extant during most of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, and is the type genus for the family Lytoceratidae. These cephalopods were fast-moving nektonic carnivores. Description Shells of ''Lytoceras'' are evolute, round or quadrate in section, covered with crinkled growth lines or riblets, and may have slight constrictions on internal molds. Some have fine striations, (parallel grooves running longitudinally along the flanks). Distribution Fossils of species within this genus have been found in the Jurassic and Cretaceous The Cretaceous ( ) is a geological period that lasted from about 145 to 66 million years ago (Mya). Eutrephoceras
''Eutrephoceras'' is an extinct genus of nautilus from the Late Jurassic to the Miocene (around 161 to 5 million years ago). They are characterized by a highly rounded involute shell with slightly sinuous suture patterns. Description ''Eutrephoceras'' typically possess nearly globular conchs (shells). The whorls are reniform (kidney-shaped) in cross section and broadly rounded on the sides and lower edge. On the upper edge it is only slightly curved. The surface of the shell is usually smooth, but can sometimes be sculptured. The suture patterns are slightly sinuous, though it can be more or less straight in some species. The umbilicus is small and barely noticeable, sometimes hidden altogether. The septa are averagely convex towards the tip. The siphuncle is small and circular in cross section. It can vary in position considerably and its placement is important in identifying different species under the genus, but it is never marginal. Puncture marks made by teeth on severa ... Eupachydiscus
''Eupachydisus'' is a large, coarse-ribbed Pachydiscid ammonite genus from the Upper Cretaceous, found in Coniacian to Campanian age strata in Europe, Madagascar, Japan, and British Columbia. The whorl section in ''Eupachydiscus'' is inflated and depressed, almost round in the later growth stages. Ribs are narrow but prominent in the early whorls, becoming thick and strong in the later. ''Eupachydiscus'' is distinct from the mostly later, Campanian - Maastrichtian, compressed and high-whorled ''Pachydiscus'', but somewhat similar to the coeval, inflated and coarse ribbed, Coniacian-Santonian The Santonian is an age in the geologic timescale or a chronostratigraphic stage. Desmophyllites
''Desmophyllites'' is a small desmoceratitid ammonite characterized by a smooth and very involute shell that lived during the Santonian to Maachstrictian stages of the Late Cretaceous. Shells of ''Desmophylites diphylloida'' from the upper Santonian are on order of 1.8 cm (0.7 in) in diameter. Baculites
''Baculites'' ("walking stick rock") is an extinct genus of cephalopods with a nearly straight shell, included in the heteromorph ammonites. The genus, which lived worldwide throughout most of the Late Cretaceous, and which briefly survived the K-Pg mass extinction event, was named by Lamarck in 1799. Life Shell anatomy The adult shell of ''Baculites'' is generally straight and may be either smooth or with sinuous striae or ribbing that typically slant dorso-ventrally forward. The aperture likewise slopes to the front and has a sinuous margin. The venter is narrowly rounded to acute while the dorsum is more broad. The juvenile shell, found at the apex, is coiled in one or two whorls and described as minute, about in diameter. Adult ''Baculites'' ranged in size from about (''Baculites larsoni'') up to in length. As with other ammonites, the shell consisted of a series of camerae, or chambers, that were connected to the animal by a narrow tube called a siphuncle by which ...
