Forbes' Battery
Forbes' Batteries are a pair of artillery batteries in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The batteries are casemated. Description The Forbes' Batteries are on the eastern end of the Northern Defences. These batteries had five guns arranged on two levels. There is a famous quarry behind the batteries which shares the same name. This complex group of fortifications is located at the end of Princes Lines and was named after Lt. Fortifications Of Gibraltar
The Gibraltar peninsula, located at the far southern end of Iberia, has great strategic importance as a result of its position by the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. It has repeatedly been contested between European and North African powers and has endured fourteen sieges since it was first settled in the 11th century. Artillery Battery

Prince George Of Hesse-Darmstadt
Prince George Louis of Hessen-Darmstadt (1669 – 13 September 1705) was a Field Marshal in the Austrian army. He is known for his career in Habsburg Spain, as Viceroy of Catalonia (1698–1701), head of the Austrian army in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1705) and governor of Gibraltar in 1704. He was killed during the Siege of Barcelona the following year. He was known in Spanish as Jorge de Darmstadt and in Catalan as Jordi Darmstadt. George Forbes, 3rd Earl Of Granard
George Forbes, 3rd Earl of Granard PC (21 October 1685 – 19 June 1765) was an Anglo-Irish naval commander and diplomat. He was at the Capture of Gibraltar. He took a very valuable prize ship and was briefly a Governor of the Leeward Islands. He took a role in politics, helping to end Robert Walpole's career, but eventually retired. Early life Forbes was the son of Arthur Forbes, 2nd Earl of Granard and Mary, daughter of Sir George Rawdon, 1st Baronet, of Moira, County Down, was born in Ireland on 21 October 1685. He was for a time educated in Drogheda Grammar School. His grandfather, Arthur Forbes, first earl, died when young Forbes was about twelve years of age. Forbes' Quarry
Forbes' Quarry is located on the northern face of the Rock of Gibraltar within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The area was quarried during the 19th century to supply stone for reinforcing the fortress' military installations. In the course of the quarrying, a limestone cave was found. The second ever Neanderthal discovery was made within this cave when Cpt. Edmund Flint found the skull of an adult female Neanderthal in 1848. Etymology Forbes' Quarry borrows its name from an 18th-century military installation located directly above the cave and known as Forbes' Battery. Hanover Battery was an artillery battery on the north west part of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The battery is casemated. Beneath the battery was a tunnel known as Hanover Gallery. Description The battery was in use in the war with Spain in 1762 when there was two 24 pound guns mounted here. The ability of the battery to give cover to troops making their way to the Kings and Queens Lines was approved by the Chief Engineer William Green in 1770. The battery gives easy access to the Princess Lines and the Princes Lines which are above the Kings And Queens lines respectively. By 1859 the two guns at Hanover Battery were assisted by additional two carronades which were also 24-pounders.
