Rui Manuel Gaudêncio Veloso ComIH (born 30 July 1957) is a Portuguese singer-songwriter and musician. Commonly called "The father of Portuguese rock" (Portuguese: ''O pai do rock português''), Veloso was a major figure in the boom of Portuguese rock music in the 1980s. His debut album '' Ar de Rock'' (1980), including the hit single "Chico Fininho", is considered a landmark of Portuguese rock. During the 1980s and 1990s, Veloso released numerous other successful singles and albums in Portugal. An unconditional lover of blues music, he played with B.B. King several times in King's shows in Portugal. Early life Rui Veloso was born in Lisbon on 30 July 1957. His father, Aureliano Veloso (25 February 1924 - 12 June 2019), was the first democratically elected mayor of Porto after the Carnation Revolution, in 1977. Paço De Arcos
Paço de Arcos () is a locality of Oeiras, Portugal, Oeiras. In 2013, the parish of Paço de Arcos merged into the new parish Oeiras e São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos e Caxias. The population in 2011 was 15,315, in an area of 3.39 km². It was elevated to town by a decree on December 7, 1926. Its name comes from the Palácio dos Arcos located at the entrance to the village, where king D. Manuel I of Portugal watched Vasco da Gama's caravels leave for India. Valentim de Carvalho () is a Portuguese record label founded in 1914. History The company started selling phonograph, musical instruments and music since its 1914 foundation at the Rua da Assunção, Lisbon. It distributes EMI in Portugal since 1920. VDC also carved names in the Portuguese music industry like Amália Rodrigues, António Variações and, most recently, Os Pontos Negros. It has two sub-labels: Popular and NorteSul. ''Ar de Rock'' (literally ''Air of Rock'', meaning "a rock look/appearance"; a pun on hard rock) is the debut album by Portuguese musician Rui Veloso, released in July 1980 by EMI-Valentim de Carvalho. Miguel Torga (), pseudonym of Adolfo Correia da Rocha ( São Martinho de Anta, Sabrosa, Vila Real district, 12 August 1907 – Coimbra, 17 January 1995), is considered one of the greatest Portuguese writers of the 20th century. He wrote poetry, short stories, a genre in which he is accounted a master, theater and a 16 volume diary, written from 1932 to 1993. Life He was born in the village of São Martinho de Anta in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region (northern Portugal), to small-time farmer parents Francisco Correia da Rocha and wife Maria da Conceição de Barros. After a short spell as student in a catholic seminary in Lamego, his father sent him to Brazil in 1920, where he worked on an uncle's coffee plantation. His uncle, finding him to be a clever student, decided to pay for his studies.
