Foothills Trail (Colorado)
The Foothills Trail is a National Recreation Trail in South and North Carolina, United States, for recreational hiking and backpacking. It extends from Table Rock State Park to Oconee State Park. It passes through the Andrew Pickens Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest, Ellicott Rock Wilderness, Whitewater Falls, and Lake Jocassee. The U.S. Forest Service built the section in the Sumter National Forest starting in 1968. Duke Power Company built the middle portion of the trail as a recreational resource in conjunction with its Bad Creek pumped storage hydroelectric project. South Carolina Highway 107
South Carolina Highway 107 (SC 107) is a state highway in the western part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. It connects Oconee County with Jackson County, North Carolina and the Cashiers area. Nearly the entirety of the route is located in the Sumter National Forest. Route description The route of SC 107 travels generally in a south–north direction, beginning at an intersection with SC 28. The route is rural and hilly in nature as it climbs the Blue Ridge Mountains to the North Carolina state line. There are several vistas overlooking Lake Jocassee and surrounding areas. The entirety of the highway is part of the state Falling Waters Scenic Byway. The entrance to Oconee State Park is located along SC 107 near its southern terminus. Oconee Station State Historic Site
Oconee Station was established in 1792 as a blockhouse on the South Carolina frontier. Troops were removed in 1799. The site also encompasses the Williams Richards House, which was built in the early 19th century as a residence and trading post. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 as Oconee Station and Richards House. There is a short spur trail to Station Cove Falls, which is a waterfall, and the Oconee Passage of the Palmetto Trail. The Oconee Station and the William Richards House were photographed by Jack Boucher of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1960. Palmetto Trail
The Palmetto Trail is a planned foot and mountain bike trail in South Carolina for recreational hiking and biking. Several of the sections are also equestrian trails. It will extend from the Oconee County, South Carolina, Oconee County mountains to the Intracoastal Waterway in Charleston County, South Carolina, Charleston County. It currently consists of 26 segments totaling . Maps and trail guides are available. The trail is sponsored by the Palmetto Conservation Foundation in cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. The trail has support from the South Carolina General Assembly. Ellicott's Rock
Ellicott’s Rock is a survey marker placed in 1811 by Andrew Ellicott as part of his survey to resolve the boundary dispute between the U.S. states of Georgia and North Carolina. The boundary dispute involved a brief armed conflict between the two called the Walton War, followed by an 1807 survey that Georgia refused to accept. Ellicott, hired by Georgia, undertook a new survey that confirmed the earlier line. He engraved a large rock in the Chattooga River with "N-G", standing for North Carolina - Georgia. The location had been prescribed in part in 1787 by the Treaty of Beaufort, though the river was not named explicitly, but rather as a then-undiscovered tributary of the Savannah River between Georgia and South Carolina. The nominal latitude of 35°N was later specified by the U.S. Congress. Jones Gap State Park
Jones Gap State Park is a South Carolina state park in northern Greenville County, near Marietta. The park, which includes the headwaters of the Middle Saluda River, is, with Caesars Head State Park, administered by the state Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism as part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness. History From 1840 to 1848, the self-taught mountain road builder Solomon Jones (1802–1899) cut a toll road from Caesars Head, South Carolina, to Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Because Jones had no formal training, local legend claimed he had blazed the trail with a hatchet while following the lead of a sow. Headwaters State Forest
Headwaters State Forest is a state forest, located in Transylvania County, North Carolina, along the South Carolina state line and is part of a larger 100,000+ acre conservation corridor that stretches some 80 miles along the state line. The name originates from the fact that the forest contains the headwaters of East Fork of the French Broad River. The North Carolina Forest Service primarily manages the forest for water and soil quality, as well as protecting rare species; however, primitive recreational uses are permitted. Caesars Head State Park
Caesars Head State Park is a park in northern Greenville County, South Carolina, that borders Transylvania County, North Carolina, and is reached via US 276. The eponymous rock formation, one of the highest points in Greenville County, is a granitic gneiss outcrop at above sea level on the Blue Ridge Escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains and rests roughly above the Piedmont below. The origin of the name "Caesars Head" is disputed, though the outcrop was most probably named for an early mountaineer's dog.
