Estadio Panamericano, Havana
Estadio Panamericano (Stade Panaméricain de La Havane) is a multi-use stadium located near Cojimar, a city ward of Havana, Cuba. It is used mostly for athletics, baseball, and as an alternate site for the Cuba national football team. History It was first used as the main stadium for the 1991 Pan American Games. The stadium opened August 1, 1991 and is able to hold 34,000 people (can have expanded capacity to 50,000). It served as the site of an episode of the American version of Top Gear in 2016. The episode showed the stadium in disrepair and mostly abandoned. Renovations The stadium was renovated in 2008 with an artificial turf replacing the original grass turf. Structure The stadium is surrounded by a park and faces nearby Boca de Cojimar (Havana Bay). Seating is mainly open air with a partially covered grandstand to the east side. Panayotis Alexander "Alexi" Lalas ( el, Αλέξης Λάλας; born June 1, 1970) is an American retired soccer player who played mostly as a defender. Lalas is best known for his participation with the United States men's national soccer team in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where he was a standout player on the team with his distinctive long beard and hair. Rhett Stowe Harty (born March 8, 1970 in Pasadena, California) is an American former soccer defender who spent one season in the Western Soccer League, one in the Continental Indoor Soccer League, one in the USISL and three with the MetroStars of Major League Soccer. Career High School and college Harty grew up in Los Angeles and attended Servite High School where he played on the boys’ soccer team. He was a Parade Magazine high school All American in 1987 and 1988. After graduating from Servite in 1988, he entered Stanford University. Eloy Salgado is a retired American soccer forward who played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League, National Professional Soccer League and USISL. Professional In 1988, Salgado graduated from Lewisville High School where he was a 1988 Parade Magazine All American High School soccer player. On June 17, 1988, the Dallas Sidekicks selected Salgado in the third round (twenty-eight) overall of the Major Indoor Soccer League draft. He played three seasons for the Sidekicks. Dante Deneen Washington (born November 21, 1970, in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American former soccer player who played as a striker. Washington played college soccer at Radford University, and was named a first team All-American in 1991. He is the NCAA career leader for assists in men's soccer. Playing career After years in the various indoor leagues and minor outdoor leagues, he signed with MLS and the Columbus Crew midway through the inaugural 1996 season. Michael Steven Lapper (born August 28, 1970 in Redondo Beach, California) is an American retired soccer defender. During his fifteen-year playing career, most of it spent as a sweeper, he played in England, Germany and the United States. He earned 44 caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national soccer team between 1991 and 1995. He was part of the U.S. teams at both the 1992 Summer Olympics and the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Yari Allnutt (born February 17, 1970) is an American retired soccer player who played professionally in Mexico and the United States, including the American Professional Soccer League and Major League Soccer. He earned five caps with the United States national team, including games at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Dario Brose (born January 27, 1970, in New York City) is a retired American soccer player who spent eight seasons in Europe, three in Major League Soccer and one in the USL First Division. He has also coached the Mid-Michigan Bucks of the Premier Development League. Youth Dario played his high school soccer for Roy C. Erik Bradley Imler (born June 1, 1971 in Silver Spring, Maryland) is an American soccer coach and former player. He won national championships while playing at the University of Virginia before becoming part of the US team that competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Curt Onalfo (born November 19, 1969) is an American former soccer player and coach who currently serves as technical director of Major League Soccer club New England Revolution. As a player, he played two seasons in France, two in the USISL, one in Mexico and four in Major League Soccer, achieving his most success with the Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United. Cameron “Cam” Rast (born January 16, 1970) is a retired American youth international soccer defender and current head coach of the Santa Clara University men’s soccer team.
