The 1989 Football League Cup Final was a football match played on 9 April 1989 between Nottingham Forest and the 1988 League Cup winners, Luton Town at Wembley Stadium. Nottingham Forest claimed victory in the 29th League Cup final with a 3–1 victory. Luton opened the scoring in the first half with a header from Mick Harford, while Forest's Lee Chapman had a goal disallowed at the other end. In the second half Forest took control and equalised with a penalty by Nigel Clough. The 1988–89 Football League Cup (known as the Littlewoods Challenge Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the 29th season of the Football League Cup, a knockout competition for England's top 92 football clubs. The competition started on 29 August 1988 and ended with the final on 9 April 1989. Des Walker
Desmond Sinclair Walker (born 26 November 1965) is an English football coach and former player, who played as a defender. At club level he played in seven cup finals for Nottingham Forest at Wembley, winning five of them. He was Forest's player of the year three times. On four straight occasions at Forest he was selected for the PFA Team of the Year. At Sheffield Wednesday he picked up another club player of the year accolade. He played in twenty seasons of senior football. All but the last three of those were in the top flight in either England or Italy. He played 59 times for England, which included the nation's run to the semi-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Dave Beaumont
David Alan Beaumont (born 10 December 1963 in Dunfermline) is a Scottish retired footballer who played for Dundee United, Luton Town and Hibernian. As a youth, Beaumont won the Under-18 European Championship with Scotland in 1982 and reached the quarter-finals of the subsequent Under-20 World Championship in 1983. A versatile defensive midfielder, Beaumont made the breakthrough into the Dundee United first team during the 1983–84 season, but found it hard to get a regular spot in a defence with a back four of Malpas, Gough, Hegarty and Narey. He was used as cover for all four, and appeared as a defensive midfielder occasionally over the next couple of seasons. Steve Foster
Stephen Brian Foster (born 24 September 1957) is an English former footballer. Football career Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, Foster was an associate schoolboy with Southampton, but was not offered a professional contract. He started his professional career at Portsmouth in 1973 as a centre forward. After a season, manager Ian St John converted Foster to a centre back and he marked his debut in that position with an own goal against Bury in November 1976. He played for his home town club until 1979 when he joined Brighton & Hove Albion. While at Brighton, Foster won three caps for England, was a member of England's 1982 World Cup squad, and reached the final of the 1983 FA Cup, where they held Manchester United to a 2–2 draw before losing 4–0 in the replay. David Preece (footballer, Born 1963)
David William Preece (28 May 1963 – 20 July 2007) was an English professional footballer who played in midfield. He was born in Bridgnorth. He played three times for the England B team. Career Preece began his career as an apprentice with Walsall, turning professional in July 1980. His debut came the following year, as a substitute in the 2–1 win against Chester City. He was signed by Luton Town manager David Pleat in December 1984 and scored on his debut, a 1–0 win at home to Aston Villa. He went on to win a League Cup winners medal with Luton in 1988 and played nearly 400 times for Luton's first team. He had a testimonial game against Manchester United in 1995 before moving to Derby County on a free transfer in August that year. Ashley Grimes (footballer, Born 1957)
Augustine Ashley Grimes (born 2 August 1957) is an Irish former footballer. He played for Manchester United, Coventry City, Luton Town, Stoke City and Osasuna (Spain). He won 18 caps for the Republic of Ireland and scored one goal, a long-range strike against Spain in a Euro 84 qualifier at Lansdowne Road in November 1982. Career On 8 March 1978 at Dalymount Park, Dublin, Grimes played in the first ever Republic of Ireland U21 game; he went on to win six under-21 caps, scoring two goals, both from penalty kicks. Grimes, who played as a defender and midfielder, began his career with junior side Villa United before joining Stella Maris Football club. Tim Breacker
Timothy Sean Breacker (born 2 July 1965) is an English football coach and former player, who is chief scout at Bolton Wanderers. As a player, he was a right-back who notably played in the Premier League for West Ham United, where he made 240 appearances, scoring 8 goals in a nine-year spell. He also played in the Football League for both Luton Town and Queens Park Rangers. He was capped twice at England U21 level. Les Sealey
Leslie Jesse Sealey (29 September 1957 – 19 August 2001) was an English professional footballer and coach. He played as a goalkeeper, most notably in the top flight for Coventry City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and West Ham United. He also played in the Football League for Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, Birmingham City, Blackpool, Leyton Orient and Bury. Following retirement, Sealey was appointed first team goalkeeping coach at West Ham United, a position he was in when he died of a heart attack on 19 August 2001. Brian Clough
Brian Howard Clough ( ; 21 March 1935 – 20 September 2004) was an English football player and manager, primarily known for his successes as a manager with Derby County and Nottingham Forest. He is one of four managers to have won the English league with two different clubs. Lee Glover
Edward Lee Glover (born 24 April 1970) is an English-born Scottish professional football manager and former player who is the manager of club Kettering Town. A forward, he started his career with Nottingham Forest in 1987. He spent seven years at the club, and also spent time on loan at Leicester City, Barnsley, and Luton Town. He moved on to Port Vale in 1994. Two years later he signed with Rotherham United, and stayed with the Millers until 2000. Steve Chettle
Stephen John Chettle (born 27 September 1968) is an English football manager and former professional footballer, who is director of football at Basford United. As a player, he was a defender from 1986 to 2005 and was best known for his time as a player at Nottingham Forest where he made 415 league appearances and played numerous seasons in the Premier League, won the League Cup and was a runner-up in the FA Cup. Despite playing most of his career in the top level of English football, Chettle never made the England squad, but came close in 1992, despite this Chettle played 12 games for the England Under-21s, captaining them in his final appearance. Garry Parker (born 7 September 1965) is an English association football, football coach and former professional player who is an assistant coach for AC Omonia, Omonia.
