Football in Åland is governed by the Åland Football Association (ÅFF), which was founded in 1943. ÅFF is a member of Football Association of Finland. Åland has 11 football clubs that compete at different levels and age groups. Åland even has its own national teams, Åland official football team and Åland official women's football team, despite not being a fully sovereign state or having membership to UEFA or FIFA. Åland women's team won the 2011 Island Games women's football tournament on the Isle of Wight. Football clubs of Åland play in leagues and competitions of Finland and Sweden. IFK Mariehamn plays currently in the Finnish men's premier league Veikkausliiga while Åland United plays in the Finnish women's top division Kansallainen Liiga. The Åland Football Association ( sv, Ålands Fotbollförbund) is the governing body of Association football, football in Åland. ÅFF is not a member of UEFA or FIFA, but is a member of the Football Association of Finland and has the status of a Finnish District Football Associations, District Football Association. ÅFF also runs the Åland official football team and Åland women's football team. Background Åland Football Association was founded in 1943 and was originally called the Ålands Bolldistrikt. The Association currently has 12 member associations of which 11 are football clubs and one is the local referee association. They together have about 60 teams covering various ages groups. The number of registered players is currently approaching the 1000 mark. Kolmonen
Kolmonen or III divisioona is the fourth level in the league system of Finnish football and comprises 104 Finnish football teams. The III divisioona was introduced in 1973 and in the mid-1990s became known as the Kolmonen (''Number Three'' in English and ''Trean'' in Swedish). The competition There are 104 clubs in the Kolmonen, divided in 9 groups of 10 to 12 teams each representing a geographical area. During the course of a season (starting in April and ending in October) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents. The top team in each Kolmonen group is promoted to Kakkonen and the two lowest placed teams are normally relegated to the Nelonen. Tommy Wirtanen
Tommy Wirtanen (born 19 January 1983) is a Finnish former footballer. He usually played as a winger and is well known for his great pace. Career IFK Mariehamn Before joining Örebro SK, Wirtanen played for IFK Mariehamn in his native Finland. It's also the only other club he has represented. While at IFK Mariehamn, Wirtanen made 180 first team appearances and scored 15 goals from 2000 to 2008. He was a part of the team that promoted IFK Mariehamn to the Finnish First Division in 2003 and the following season all the way to the Premier Division. Daniel Sjölund
Henrik Daniel "Daja" Sjölund (born 22 April 1983) is a Finnish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He is best remembered for his stints with Djurgårdens IF and IFK Norrköping. He won 37 caps for the Finland national team. Career Daniel Sjölund was born in the municipality of Finström, based in Åland which is a Swedish-speaking autonomous region that belongs to Finland. Sjölund started his career at IF Finströms Kamraterna, when he was a child. Annica Maria Sjölund (born 31 March 1985) is a Finnish football striker, who last played for Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC of Sweden's Damallsvenskan. She previously played for FC United Pietarsaari and Åland United in Finland's Naisten Liiga and Jitex BK, Älvsjö AIK and AIK in Sweden. Jani Lyyski (born 16 March 1983) is a Finnish former footballer. Club career Lyyski started his career in IFK Mariehamn he played for seven years, before moving on to Vaasan Palloseura in 2008. Swedish Football Division 7
Division 7 is the ninth level in the league system of Swedish football and comprises 47 sections with 9 to 12 football teams in each. The competition There are 47 groups of 10 to 12 teams each representing a local geographical area. During the course of a season (starting in April and ending in October) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 18 to 22 games depending on the number of teams. The top team in each Division 7 group is promoted to Division 6 and the second placed teams may also be promoted or participate in the promotion/relegation play-offs.
