''The Fontanelle Observer'' is an American weekly newspaper focused on the news of Fontanelle, Iowa. It was founded in 1863 by the Gow brothers (which included James M. Gow).''History of Adair County, Iowa, and its People'' (1915) Its news is partly digitized via the website of the '' Creston News Advertiser''. The newspaper passed to Indiana native Manley Albert Rany (1857–1914) in 1881. During his ownership, Will Pruitt also ran the paper under lease for a few years. William H. McClure became its owner and publisher in 1894, remaining in the role until 1915. Fontanelle, Iowa
Fontanelle is a city in Summerset Township, Adair County, Iowa, United States. The population was 676 at the time of the 2020 census. History Fontanelle was platted in 1855, by New York state native James C. Gibbs (1820–1907),''Adair County History 1976'' who followed the arrival of a transient named Collins. In the summer of that year, Gibbs purchased lots on the northeast of the city square where he constructed a large log cabin. He brought his family there to live. Gibbs ran a hotel out of the log cabin briefly. He died in 1907, aged 86, and is buried with his wife, Phebe, in Fontanelle Cemetery. D. M. Valentine purchased lots immediately to the west of Gibbs', thus becoming the second settler. The city is named for chief Logan Fontanelle of the Omaha tribe, son of the French fur trader Lucien Fontanelle of the American Fur Company and an Omaha tribeswoman. Creston is a city in and the county seat of Union County, Iowa. The population was 7,536 at the time of the 2020 Census. History Creston was originally settled in 1868 as a survey camp for the Burlington and Missouri Railroad. It was named for the fact that it was on the crest of the railroad line between the Missouri and Mississippi river basins. Greenville is a city in Clay County, Iowa, United States. The population was 71 in the 2020 census, a decline from 93 in 2000. History The Greenville post office opened in 1871. The town was named for its first postmaster, A. W. Green. Bank robbery of 1901 On November 16, 1901, one Mr. Brown opened the bank in Greenville and discovered that the bank had been robbed. The vault handle had been removed, explosives placed into the opening, and the vault door blown off. Three men were seen later in Spencer, then Webb, and finally Albert City where they were cornered at the depot. A gunfight ensued, during which one of the gunmen was killed.
