FontShop International was an international manufacturer of digital typefaces (fonts), based in Berlin. It was one of the largest digital Type foundry, type foundries. The ''FontFont'' library of fonts contains designs by 160 type designers, among them renowned designers such as Peter Biľak, Evert Bloemsma, Erik van Blokland, Neville Brody, Martin Majoor, Albert-Jan Pool, Hans Reichel, Just van Rossum, Fred Smeijers, and Erik Spiekermann. Martin Majoor
Martin Majoor (born 14 October 1960) is a Dutch type designer and graphic designer. As of 2006, he had worked since 1997 in both Arnhem, Netherlands, and Warsaw, Poland. Biography Early life Majoor was born in 1960 in the town of Baarn, in the Provinces of the Netherlands, Dutch province of Utrecht (province), Utrecht. Education Majoor enrolled at the then (Academy of Fine Arts, Arnhem), now part of ArtEZ University of Arts, ArtEZ University of the Arts, in 1980. He graduated in 1986. For a student placement, Majoor went to URW Type Foundry in 1984. He used their Ikarus (typography software), Ikarus system to design a typeface named , which was never released. Neville Brody
Neville Stanley Brody (born 23 April 1957) is an English graphic designer, typographer and art director. He is known for his work on '' The Face'' magazine (1981–1986), ''Arena'' magazine (1987–1990), and designing record covers for artists such as Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, The Bongos, 23 Skidoo and Depeche Mode. He created the company Research Studios in 1994 and is a founding member of Fontworks. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Erik Spiekermann
Erik Spiekermann (born 30 May 1947) is a German typographer, designer and writer. He is an honorary professor at the University of the Arts Bremen and ArtCenter College of Design. Biography Spiekermann studied art history at Berlin's Free University, funding himself by running a letterpress printing press in the basement of his house. Between 1972 and 1979, he worked as a freelance graphic designer in London before returning to Berlin and founding MetaDesign with two partners. In 1989, he and his then-wife Joan Spiekermann started FontShop, the first mail-order distributor for digital fonts. FontShop International followed and now publishes the ''FontFont'' range of typefaces. Erik Van Blokland
Erik van Blokland (born 29 August 1967 in Gouda) is a Dutch typeface designer, educator and computer programmer. He is the head of the Type Media Master of Design program in Typeface Design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague in the Netherlands. Letterror Letterror is the name of the collaborative efforts of Erik van Blokland and Just van Rossum. While studying at Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, the two were introduced by the school's professor of Type Design, Gerrit Noordzij, who "knew they shared an enthusiasm for computers and programming". Albert-Jan Pool (born 1960) is a Dutch type designer and educator. Biography Albert-Jan Pool was born in 1960 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. After his study, he moved to Germany. From 1987 to 1991, he was Type Director at Scangraphic in Wedel, Germany. Just Van Rossum
Just van Rossum (born 1966 in Haarlem) is a Dutch typeface designer, software developer, and professor at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague. He is the co-founder of design firm, LettError, along with Erik van Blokland. Just van Rossum is the younger brother of Guido van Rossum, creator of the Python programming language. Early life and education Just van Rossum was born and raised in the Netherlands alongside his brother Guido. In 1981, his father bought a Sinclair ZX81 home computer. The ZX81's primary function was to allow the user to write programs in BASIC. Typeface
A typeface (or font family) is a design of Letter (alphabet), letters, Numerical digit, numbers and other symbols, to be used in printing or for electronic display. Fred Smeijers
Fred Smeijers (Eindhoven, 1961) is a Dutch type designer, researcher and writer. He was educated at the ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem in the early 1980s. Smeijers is the creative director and co-founder of the typeface design and publishing company Type By. In 2019 Smeijers was appointed Professor in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in the UK. Work After his graduation, Smeijers worked for Océ – a Dutch manufacturer of printing and copying hardware. Between 1986 and 1990, he worked at the Océ's industrial design department as a typographic advisor, designing typefaces for early laser printers. Type Foundry
A type foundry is a company that designs or distributes typefaces. Before digital typography, type foundries manufactured and sold metal and wood typefaces for hand typesetting, and matrices for line-casting machines like the Linotype and Monotype, for letterpress printers.
