Nikolai Maximovich Fomin (, ; born 1937 in Novoekonomichne, Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR) is a Ukrainian engineer. He was the chief engineer of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant from 1981 until the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. He started his career at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. In 1972 he began working at the Chernobyl plant. As chief engineer, he approved the infamous turbine safety test that led to the explosion of the reactor. However, the deputy chief engineer Anatoly Dyatlov was the principal person responsible for the test. Fomin learned of the accident at about 4 am on April 26, 1986, and participated in cleaning up the aftermath. He was subsequently arrested together with plant director Viktor Bryukhanov. He is known for his part in the 1941 Defense of Brest Fortress, during which the German Army captured and immediately executed him. Viktor Trokhymovych Fomin ( ua, Віктор Троxимович Фомін, russian: Виктор Трофимович Фомин; born 13 January 1929 in Sloviansk; died 29 December 2007) was a Ukrainian football player. Sergey Vladimirovich Fomin (Сергей Владимирович Фомин) (born 16 February 1958 in Saint Petersburg, Russia) is a Russian American mathematician who has made important contributions in combinatorics and its relations with algebra, geometry, and representation theory. Together with Andrei Zelevinsky, he introduced cluster algebras.
