Jens Christian Folkman Schaanning (11 January 1804 – 13 September 1886) was a Norwegian politician. He worked as a vicar (''sogneprest'') in Christianssund. Jon Hal Folkman (December 8, 1938 – January 23, 1969) was an American mathematician, a student of John Milnor, and a researcher at the RAND Corporation. Schooling Folkman was a Putnam Fellow in 1960. He received his Ph.D. in 1964 from Princeton University, under the supervision of Milnor, with a thesis entitled ''Equivariant Maps of Spheres into the Classical Groups''. Research Jon Folkman contributed important theorems in many areas of combinatorics. In geometric combinatorics, Folkman is known for his pioneering and posthumously-published studies of oriented matroids; in particular, the Folkman–Lawrence topological representation theorem is "one of the cornerstones of the theory of oriented matroids". Judah Folkman
Moses Judah Folkman (February 24, 1933 – January 14, 2008) was an American medical scientist best known for his research on tumor angiogenesis, the process by which a tumor attracts blood vessels to nourish itself and sustain its existence. He founded the field of angiogenesis research, which has led to the discovery of a number of therapies based on inhibiting or stimulating neovascularization. Roy Folkman
Roy Folkman ( he, רוֹעִי פוֹלְקְמָן, born 5 August 1975) is an Israeli politician. He served as a member of the Knesset for Kulanu between 2015 and 2019. Biography During his IDF national service Folkman served as a combat medic. After leaving the army, he was involved in the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, and studied for a BA in economics, Islam and Middle Eastern studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was leader of the student union. He later gained a master's degree in public policy, studying at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Between 2008 and 2012 he worked as an advisor to the Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat. In the 2013 he was placed sixth on Barkat's list for the City Council elections, but failed to win a seat. Folkman's Theorem
Folkman's theorem is a theorem in mathematics, and more particularly in arithmetic combinatorics and Ramsey theory. According to this theorem, whenever the natural numbers are partitioned into finitely many subsets, there exist arbitrarily large sets of numbers all of whose sums belong to the same subset of the partition.. Shapley–Folkman Lemma
The Shapley–Folkman lemma is a result in convex geometry that describes the Minkowski addition of sets in a vector space. It is named after mathematicians Lloyd Shapley and Jon Folkman, but was first published by the economist Ross M. Starr. The lemma may be intuitively understood as saying that, if the number of summed sets exceeds the dimension of the vector space, then their Minkowski sum is approximately convex. Related results provide more refined statements about ''how close'' the approximation is. For example, the Shapley–Folkman theorem provides an upper bound on the distance between any point in the Minkowski sum and its convex hull. This upper bound is sharpened by the Shapley–Folkman–Starr theorem (alternatively, Starr's corollary). The Shapley–Folkman lemma has applications in economics, optimization and probability theory.
