Otto Folin
Otto Knut Olof Folin (April 4, 1867 – October 25, 1934) was a Swedish-born American chemist who is best known for his groundbreaking work at Harvard University on practical micromethods for the determination of the constituents of protein-free blood filtrates and the discovery of creatine phosphate in muscles. Background Folin was born in Åseda, Småland in Sweden. He was the seventh of twelve children of Nils Magnus Folin and Eva Olson. He moved to America at the age of fifteen following two brothers and an aunt who had already settled there. He carried on his schooling in Stillwater, Minnesota. He moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota entering the University of Minnesota and completed his B.S in 1892. Career In 1896, Folin returned to Sweden and began his research in the laboratory of Prof. Olof Hammarsten (1841-1932) at Uppsala University. Folin's Reagent
Folin's reagent or sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate is a chemical reagent used as a derivatizing agent to measure levels of amines and amino acids. The reagent reacts with them in alkaline solution to produce a fluorescent material that can be easily detected. This should not be confused with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, that is used to detect phenolic compounds. The Folin reagent can be used with an acidic secondary reagent to distinguish MDMA and related compounds from PMMA and related compounds. Léopold De Folin
Léopold de Folin (Alexandre Guillaume Léopold de, Marquis de Folin, 28 August 1817 – 5 July 1896) was an author, oceanographer, malacologist and early founder (1871) of the collections which were to become the '' Musée de la mer'' (sea museum) in Biarritz, France De Folin wrote on Caecidae for the reports published following the Challenger expedition of 1872-1876. With Henri Milne-Edwards's son Alphonse, de Folin carried out a survey of the Gulf of Gascony. He worked on board the ''Travailleur'' (a paddle-wheel aviso) in 1880, and on board the ''Talisman'' in 1883, for trips to the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands and the Azores. Punicafolin is an ellagitannin from the leaves of '' Punica granatum'' (pomegranate) and in '' Phyllanthus emblica''. Taxifolin
Taxifolin (5,7,3',4'-flavan-on-ol), also known as dihydroquercetin, belongs to the subclass flavanonols in the flavonoids, which in turn is a class of polyphenols. It is extracted from plants such as Siberian larch and milk thistle. Stereocenters Taxifolin has two stereocenters on the C-ring, as opposed to quercetin which has none. For example, (+)-taxifolin has (2''R'',3''R'')-configuration, making it one out of four stereoisomers that comprise two pairs of enantiomers. Natural occurrences Taxifolin is found in non-glutinous rice boiled with adzuki bean (adzuki-meshi). It can be found in conifers like the Siberian larch, ''Larix sibirica'', in Russia, in ''Pinus roxburghii'', in ''Cedrus deodara'' and in the Chinese yew, '' Taxus chinensis var. mairei''. It is also found in the silymarin extract from the milk thistle seeds. Taxifolin is present in vinegars aged in cherry wood.
