Foixà
Foixà is a village and Municipalities of Spain, municipality in the comarques, comarca (county) of the Baix Empordà. Geography The rural village of Foixà stretches from the right bank to the lower basin of the Ter (river). It is divided into two main sections: la Vila (the village), which surrounds the old 13th century Castle of Foixà atop a hill, and L'Església (the church), near the parish church, of a less dense population. The stream Foixà provides water to the village and empties into the Daró after Fontanilles, passing Ultramort and the Daró Mountains. The forests that surround it (about 1000 ha) are inhabited mainly by oaks and pines. History The first documentation found dates from 1019, when it belonged to the county of Empúries, just on the western edge and bordering the county of Girona. Ultramort
Ultramort is a village in the Provinces of Spain, province of Province of Girona, Girona and autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. Ultramort was first documented in 1046 with the name Ultramorte. From then on, mentions of the place become more frequent. The name Ultramort is made up of the Latin preposition ULTRA (meaning beyond) and the pre-Roman place name MURTA/MURTRA (meaning still water, well, pit, puddle). It was probably given the name from the perspective of one of the three villages on which it apparently depended until 1316 (Rupià, Rúpia, Parlavà, Paralvá, Foixà, Foixá). Ultramort would originally have been a small village depending on one of these three larger villages which were "on the other side of the pond", in other words ULTRA-MURTA. Baix Empordà in Catalan (; en, Lower Empordà, italic=yes) or Bajo Ampurdán in Spanish () is a ''comarca'' (county) in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It is one of the two ''comarca'' into which Empordà was divided in the comarcal division of 1936, the other one being Alt Empordà. It is popularly known as ''L'Empordanet'' ("the Little Empordà"). Geography Extent Baix Empordà is the southern portion of the historical region of Empordà. It includes the municipalities between the Montgrí Massif, just north of the river Ter, and the Aro valley, in the south. Catalonia is (as of 2018) divided into 947 Municipalities of Spain, municipalities. Each municipality typically represents one significant urban settlement, of any size from village to city, with its surrounding land. This is not always the case, though. This is a list of the 42 ''comarques'' (singular ''comarca'', , ) into which Catalonia is divided. A ''comarca'' is a group of municipalities, roughly equivalent to a county in the US or a district or council in the UK. However, in the context of Catalonia, the term "county" can be a bit misleading, because in medieval Catalonia, aside from the kings of Aragon, the most important rulers were counts, notably the Counts of Barcelona and of Urgell. Ricard Opisso (1880–1966) was a Catalan cartoonist, caricaturist, illustrator and painter. Biography Son of Alfred Opisso i Viñas, journalist, historian and critic, and of Antonia Sala I Gil, his sister Regina Opisso, was also a writer. He comes from an illustrious family of artists.
