Foggia (, , ; nap, label= Foggiano, Fògge ) is a city and former ''comune'' of Apulia, in Southern Italy, capital of the province of Foggia. In 2013, its population was 153,143. Foggia is the main city of a plain called Tavoliere, also known as the "granary of Italy". History The name "''Foggia''" (originally ''Focis'') probably derives from Latin "''fovea''", meaning "''pit''", referring to the pits where wheat was stored. Milan Linate Airport is the third international airport of Milan, the second-largest city and largest urban area of Italy, behind Malpensa Airport and Orio al Serio Airport. Lumiwings is a minor Greek airline based at Foggia Gino Lisa Airport operating charter and scheduled services. History Lumiwings was founded in December of 2015 in Athens by Efthimios Zacharias and Dimitris Kremiotis, former pilots of Astra Airlines. Flight operations began in 2018 on behalf of Astra Airlines with a Boeing 737-300 in a one-year lease. After Astra Airlines closed in 2019, Lumiwings became independent and operates charter flights for tour operators and sub charters for other airlines. Vieste (; nap, label= Viestano, Vìst) is a town, ''comune'' and former Catholic bishopric in the province of Foggia, in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. A marine resort in Gargano, Vieste has received Blue Flags for the purity of its waters from the Foundation for Environmental Education. The area covered by the comune is included in the Gargano National Park. History In medieval times, the port was frequently attacked by pirates, Saracens and other enemies of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1554 approximately 7,000 inhabitants were enslaved by the Turks. Those deemed too elderly or infirm for slavery were executed. This event is commemorated in an annual ceremony. Peschici is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. Famous for its seaside resorts, its territory belongs to the Gargano National Park and to the Gargano Mountain Community. Geography Peschici is situated on the north-eastern coast of Gargano promontory, east of San Menaio, from Rodi Garganico, and west of Vieste. The town sits over a karst spur facing the sea, with a height of more than ; the territory features a number of coastal watch towers. The Isole Tremiti, also called "Isole Diomedee" (Diomedes' Islands, from Greek ''Diomèdee'', Διομήδεες) are an archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, north of the Gargano Peninsula. They constitute a ''"comune"'' of Italy's Province of Foggia and form part of the Gargano national park. The archipelago is composed of 5 islands: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa. The islands were used for the internment of political prisoners during Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime. But it was also the prison of Julia the Younger, the granddaughter of Augustus and, in 780, the prison of Paul the Deacon at the behest of Charlemagne. Alidaunia S.r.L. is an Italian airline based in Foggia. It operates scheduled passenger services, air ambulance, air taxi/charter, offshore, aircraft maintenance, flying school and aerial work services. Its main base is Gino Lisa Airport, Foggia. History Alidaunia was established in March 1976 and in 1978 was licensed for film and photographic work. In 1984 it received a license for public transport. With government support in 1985 it started scheduled services from Foggia to the Tremiti Islands. In 1992 and 1993 it operated on the Foggia to Milan (Malpensa) route and from 1993 to 1995 on the Foggia to Parma route using a Mitsubishi MU 300 aircraft on both routes.
