Flying 20 Club
The Flying 20 Club is one of the oldest continuously active flying clubs in the United States. It is based at Danbury Municipal Airport in Danbury, Connecticut. History The club was originally incorporated on June 22, 1940 by 20 members who each put up $20 toward the purchase of a Piper J-2 Cub. Since then, the club has owned several aircraft throughout its history from both Cessna and Piper, and currently owns two Piper Archers and one Piper Dakota. The number of members has ranged from the original 20 up to approximately 50. On September 12, 2007, the club lost one of its planes due to a fire that destroyed the old Reliant Air hangar. Notable for being a part of history, the hangar was witness to the start of Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. The club has since replaced the destroyed aircraft with a 2000 Piper Archer III. Danbury Municipal Airport
Danbury Municipal Airport is a public use general aviation and commercial airport located three miles (5 km) southwest of the central business district of Danbury, in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The airport opened in 1930. It is currently run by the City of Danbury under the management of Michael Safranek. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a regional reliever airport facility. The Reliant Air building burned down on the evening of September 12, 2007. The hangar was located on the northeast side of the airport. Flying Club
A flying club or aero club is a not-for-profit, member-run organization that provides its members with affordable access to aircraft. Many clubs also provide flight training, flight planning facilities, pilot supplies and associated services, as well as organizing social functions, fly-ins and fly-outs to other airports and so forth. While flying clubs are home to those who pursue flying as a hobby, many commercial pilots also get their start at flying clubs. Most flying clubs own and rent small general aviation aircraft. The Taylor J-2 Cub (later also known as the Piper J-2 Cub) is an American two-seat light aircraft that was designed and built by the Taylor Aircraft Company. The company became the Piper Aircraft Company and the J-2 was first of a long line of related Piper Cub designs. Development The J-2 Cub was a development of the earlier Taylor Cub. Flight training is a course of study used when learning to pilot an aircraft. The overall purpose of primary and intermediate flight training is the acquisition and honing of basic airmanship skills.
